Trends come and go, but jewelry is forever. Jewelry that boosts your confidence, never tarnishes, and can be passed from generation to generation — that is the type of jewelry you want to adorn yourself with.
Denver-based Element 79 Contemporary Jewelry was established eight years ago by longtime jeweler Carol Ferguson. The company’s marketing director and showroom manager, Christine Mulcahy, lays out her layering tips ahead of this upcoming holiday season so you can sparkle a bit brighter.
Christine recommends varying the length of three to four necklaces to avoid them getting tangled and to help curate a more refined visual. “I personally love four layers,” said Christine.
You want to alternate necklace lengths—begin with a shorter necklace around 15 inches (Christine loves a timeless diamond necklace) and work your way up to a thicker, longer chain that can be adjusted to around 30 inches.
She also recommends differentiating chain styles and textures. “Combine delicate chains with chunkier links, paperclip styles, or gemstone strands. The contrast adds dimension and helps prevent tangling.”
Like with any good art form, there should be a focal point. Christine recommends selecting “one ‘hero’ piece—perhaps a meaningful pendant or a bold charm—and layer simpler designs around it. This gives the eye a clear place to rest and brings harmony to the look.”
However you choose to style your pieces, it is all about experimentation and what speaks to you most. Play with different types of metals, sizes, and gemstones to see what you can create that makes you feel most like you.
