I distinctly remember bringing our first child home from the hospital. My husband and I carefully swaddled her, rocked her to sleep, and laid her between us on our bed. We stared at her for a long moment, then silently at each other.
I can still recall the panic rising in my chest, followed by the irrational thought: When are her actual parents coming to pick her up? Surely we weren’t expected to care for this tiny human all day, every day … right?
As a pediatrician, I have the joy and privilege of walking alongside families as they transition from independence and freedom to the all-consuming responsibility of caring for a child. No amount of preparation or planning can fully equip parents for what awaits them when they bring a baby into the world. Parenthood is a season filled with surprises.
There is the surprise of how much—and how often—a newborn can poop. The surprise of how little sleep a person can survive on and still function. The surprise of how challenging feeding a newborn can be. And perhaps most shocking of all, the realization of just how much free time existed before becoming a parent.
Yet the greatest surprise isn’t the exhaustion or the endless learning curve. It is discovering our capacity to love selflessly. Parenthood is a refining process that teaches us, day after day, to place the needs of another before our own. I see it in mothers who sacrifice sleep, comfort, and personal well-being to help their babies thrive. I see it in parents who patiently comfort a toddler after an irrational dinner-table meltdown, then rock and sing that same child to sleep, assuring them of their unfailing love.
As children grow, that love changes. It remains imperfect and deeply human—yet steadfast—through mistakes, disappointments, and changing seasons. This is the mystery and beauty of parenthood: the opportunity to pour ourselves into something beyond our own lives and, in doing so, discover a deeper kind of love.
