Fall Adventures around West Austin

Finding Joy in the Simple Things

This is the time of year when the Texas Hill Country truly shines. In West Austin, with its rolling hills, green expanse, and the beautiful waters of Lake Austin and Lake Travis, now is the best time to enjoy all that our area offers. Throughout the seasons, these lakes remain as undeniable anchors for the community, playing a central role in what makes our region extraordinary.

The neighborhoods of West Austin offer more than just picturesque views. They provide a lifestyle that's intertwined with the natural surroundings. As the holiday season ramps up, we all understandably become busy and might overlook the beauty that lies just outside our doors.

As someone who calls this region home, I'm thrilled to spotlight a few of the gems that I enjoy, especially during the fall holiday season.

Lakeway Marina has been a community staple since the 1960s and provides a range of services, from boat rentals to annual maintenance. It's the perfect go-to spot for both locals and visitors to appreciate the lake's beauty during the fall. If you've never experienced the thrill of a kayak ride during the golden hour at Lake Travis, let me tell you, it's something you won't want to miss. And if you're seeking other rental options, Austin Pedal Kayaks, Keep Austin Wet, and Float On are at your fingertips.

For those in need of a change of scenery and some of the most impressive views of Lake Travis, I highly recommend taking Highway 71 towards Spicewood. Just before you reach the Pedernales River, a turn down Pace Bend Road will lead you straight to the heart of Pace Bend Park.

My family and I have spent countless weekends at Pace Bend Park, and each visit feels like the first. Its nine-mile stretch along Lake Travis showcases numerous camping sites ideal for a weekend retreat under the stars. The limestone cliffs at the park's west end provide an excellent view of Lake Travis. It's also a haven for water enthusiasts, even during the cooler seasons, offering opportunities for canoeing and kayaking from a handy boat ramp. Those in search of tranquility can find solace in the park's secluded areas and beneath its shade-providing oak trees, perfect for lounging in a hammock. For those with an adventurous spirit, the park's scenic trails and inviting picnic spots are ready for you to explore.

Beyond the Lake Travis shores, there is even more to discover. If you're anything like us and sometimes crave a rush of adrenaline, I would highly recommend Lake Travis Zipline Adventures. There's nothing quite like the thrill of soaring over the lake and incredible canyons, feeling the cool wind against your face. For a different perspective, consider a helicopter tour with Helo Austin, offering a bird's-eye view of the lakes and the Texas Hill Country. If heights aren’t your thing, there are several other parks not far from the lake. These spaces are perfect for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground and offer fun activities for all ages. Mansfield Dam Park, Lakeway City Park, Hamilton Greenbelt, and Bee Cave Central Park are great options, whether you want to take a leisurely walk, go for a jog, or enjoy a bike ride.

For those who prefer manicured greens over natural terrains, West Austin has numerous options for you. The University of Texas Golf Club provides challenging shots overlooking Lake Austin while bordering the Balcones Natural Wildlife Preserve. Meanwhile, Falcon Head Golf Club features championship-level courses designed to test your golfing skills. Live Oak Golf Course at Lakeway Country Club, renowned for its tight tree-lined fairways, ensures breathtaking views with each round, while Yaupon Golf Course stands out with its lush fairways and a rich variety of unique holes. These venues provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy scenic views while teeing off.

Beyond the greens, there are moments when simple joys involve discovering a sanctuary of relaxation, where the stresses of everyday life melt away. Especially in today's fast-paced world, a spa day can be the perfect reset. Treat yourself or your loved ones to one of West Austin's award-winning spas. These establishments offer a holistic experience of rejuvenation, from invigorating massages to quiet lounging areas with spectacular pool or lakeside views. Among our top picks are Lakeway Resort and Spa, Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa, and Miraval Austin Resort & Spa. Each destination resort offers its distinct signature of relaxation and luxury.

As we explore the wonders of West Austin, let's not forget the essence of this season. In the spirit of reflection and gratitude, I encourage you to fully embrace the simple joys in our community. Whether you're dropping a kayak into the waters of Lake Austin or Lake Travis, strolling along the picturesque trails of Pace Bend Park, or enjoying a round of golf at one of our exceptional courses, remember that these experiences aren't just about showcasing West Austin's beauty—they make you an integral part of it.

Having been an active member of this community for many years, I can confidently say that there's truly no place like West Austin. Every season, every sunset, and every community gathering deepens my love for this special place I proudly call home. I invite you to discover the beauty of West Austin this holiday season and create your own cherished memories.
