Tucked into the heart of historic McKinney, The Bingham Estate offers a rare blend of preservation and imagination, where the past is honored while new memories unfold. The estate’s story begins in 1883, when Captain John Henry Bingham, a Civil War veteran and publisher of the McKinney Enquirer, built the main house for his family. With six children and a growing town around them, the Binghams became part of McKinney’s earliest chapters.
Today, that same home remains the centerpiece of the estate, thoughtfully restored and surrounded by six cottages named after the Bingham children. The result is an experience that feels both rooted in history and entirely transportive.
For owner Erika McWilliams, the vision was immediate. “I’ve always loved historic homes and preserving pieces of history, but when I walked onto the property it felt like something truly special,” says Erika McWilliams, Owner The Bingham Estate. “I immediately knew it had the potential to become a place where people could gather, slow down, and experience something beautiful.”
Inspired by the charm of Charleston, South Carolina, Erika set out to create a Southern-inspired retreat in North Texas. Working alongside residential designer Mark McReynolds and interiors by Sidewalk Dreamery, each cottage was designed with intention, reflecting the personality of a Bingham child while maintaining a cohesive, elevated aesthetic.
Over time, that vision has expanded beyond design into experience. “It’s really become a place for connection, whether that’s a quiet weekend, a retreat, or a special celebration with close friends,” says Erika.
The estate now welcomes a wide range of gatherings. From girlfriends’ getaways and mahjong weekends to curated tea parties hosted with Chef Donna of the Jelly Queens, the property is designed to bring people together. Guests often reserve multiple cottages, or the entire estate, allowing for both privacy and shared moments.
Preserving the integrity of the original home remained central throughout the transformation. “The goal was never to change the soul of the property but to restore it and build around it in a way that feels authentic,” explains Erika. That philosophy is evident in every detail, where historic charm meets modern comfort through features like soaking tubs, fireplaces, and thoughtfully designed interiors.
Beyond the estate itself, local partnerships enhance the guest experience. Collaborations with small businesses and creatives throughout McKinney allow visitors to connect not only with the property, but with the community that surrounds it.
Because of its intimate scale, planning ahead is key. “We recommend booking several months in advance, especially for weekends or group gatherings,” notes Erika. The process begins with a personalized inquiry, ensuring each stay reflects the group’s vision.
What ultimately sets The Bingham Estate apart is its ability to transport. With gardens, gathering spaces, a pool, pickleball court, and a charming tearoom, the property offers more than accommodations. It offers atmosphere.
“My hope is that when people visit The Bingham Estate, they feel like they’ve stepped into a story,” says Erika. “It’s a place where people can slow down, enjoy beautiful surroundings, and make lasting memories together.”
