The Gifts a Mother Brings

Mother’s Day is upon us, and it’s time to recognize the roles a mother plays in the development and early learning of her children.

Mothers are their children’s first teachers. They teach their children to talk and walk and all the important skills that give them independence. Language acquisition begins with the hearing and imitating of sounds a child hears predominantly from his or her mother.

The example set regarding manners, patience, and all the virtues is imparted naturally from a mother to her children. These first impressions from birth to three are the most formative.

Foremost, a child learns love from the loving energy exchange that occurs with his or her mother. As we grow up, we learn that there is no one in this world who loves us more than our mother. The mother also learns about love when she gives birth to her child and raises them. Rajneesh is quoted as saying, “The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother never. A mother is something absolutely new."   (Since this is a quote, I made no changes. a comma after mother, never, does show up on the grammar check.)

Every day, I am fortunate to witness children interacting with their mothers at my school. Often, I have observed a child falling, picking himself up, and continuing a game, only later to watch him dissolve into tears when his mother arrives, having conserved every tear just for her.

Everyone on this earth came to be by way of a mother. I speak firsthand when I say my mother was my best friend. She taught me courage by being courageous and made my heart light with her laughter. From my mother, my first and most significant teacher, I was given my life and learned unconditional love.

Enjoy your children and enjoy your mother.

Happy Mother’s Day!
