Your business has a very unique name - Room 9 3⁄4. Why did you choose this name, and how does it relate to your business and practice?

9 3⁄4 is actually a Harry Potter reference! I told my husband I didn’t want a typical spa name for my business. I wanted something unique to me so people would remember me. I started my business out of a room in our house and combined my love for Harry Potter.  People will know right away if it's a Harry Potter reference, or if they don't I tell them. Then when they see Harry Potter things, they’ll tell me they thought of me!

What inspired you to pursue a career in esthetics?

In college, I worked at a reception desk at a med spa. I liked what the estheticians were doing. I loved the one-on-one connections they had with people and the trust that people put in them. It's more than just skincare. It’s the relationships you build with people. I get to hear about the milestones and life events of my clients.

In skincare, especially facials, I focus on making people feel and look good. In turn, it makes them feel more confident in their skin. I couldn’t be more thankful that I pursued this career; helping others in their skincare journey is incredibly rewarding.

Can you share an example of a skincare routine that contributes to both the esthetic and overall well-being of the client?

When we look good, we feel good.

The habits we form, the lifestyle choices we make have an impact on our overall health. Our skin health depends so much on what we put in our bodies and what we apply directly to our skin. When you're on a good skincare routine, you feel more confident about your skin and as a result, it makes you feel good.

How do you educate clients beyond the treatment room, such as home skincare routines?

Our skin is the body’s largest organ and it works super hard to protect us. In return, it’s our job to protect our skin. A regular skincare routine helps maintain our skin's health, keeping it clear, smooth, and radiant. The benefits are not just skin-deep. Good skin care practices, like exfoliating, facial massage, & Gua sha can help stimulate blood circulation and lymphatic drainage and promote overall physical health.

How do you balance the desire for immediate aesthetic results with the long-term health and well-being of your clients?

I remind clients that instant gratification treatments aren't nourishing or protecting their skin. Giving it quality ingredients like vitamins, peptides, and antioxidants and protecting it with a good SPF will have a long-term health effect on your skin. Treatments are temporary results. Eighty percent of your skincare is what you do at home; 20% is what you do in a treatment room. Getting facials and practicing good skincare habits is amazing for your skin but also even better for your mental well-being. Good things take time.

I use the analogy of going to the gym. You don't go to the gym once and suddenly you're in shape. It takes time. It's the same with skincare. By developing a continuous habit and routine and being disciplined to do that routine, you’ll begin seeing the benefits. You'll feel so good.

How would you guide a client in achieving their skincare goals while considering their overall health?

Practicing self-care and skincare is a step towards overall wellness. It's not about having a flawless complexion but creating a healthier relationship with yourself. By taking care of your skin, you're sending a powerful message to yourself that your wellness matters and it's a daily affirmation of self-worth, self-respect, and self-love.

What do you suggest for taking care of our skin going into 2024?

Start simple. Skincare does not have to be the 12-step routine you see on social media. It’s not that complex. Getting in the habit of cleansing, moisturizing, and wearing sunscreen is a great start. If skincare seems daunting, set up a time to meet with me! I would love to help guide you and help you feel more confident with your skincare routine.
