The Home Advantage

Building Strong Foundations Through Homeschooling

When Missy Wilson’s husband Scott first mentioned homeschooling their future children, she wasn't convinced.

“Initially, I was hesitant,” Missy admits. “I thought, I’m not sure I can do this.”

But after praying about it and talking to other homeschoolers, something shifted.

“I looked at their families and saw something I wanted.”

Today, Missy homeschools all four of her children: Levi (17), Savanah (15), Violet (13), and Everly (10).

Homeschooling has transformed their home into more than just a living space. It’s a classroom, a workshop, and the heart of their family’s life together.

BUILDING STRONG FOUNDATIONS

For the Wilsons, homeschooling was never just about education.

“We wanted to raise happy and good people,” Missy explains. “Kids with godly character and compassion for those around them.”

The decision to center their children’s education at home has given the family something priceless: time together.

Their flexible schedule allows learning to happen anywhere: gathered on the couch, around the kitchen table, or outside on beautiful days.

The children have also gained invaluable hands-on experience working with their father, Scott, who works at local homebuilding company Strong Roots.

While Scott builds houses for other families, he’s also building character and skills in his own children.

“They’ve learned how to lay tile, clean houses, and work through punch lists,” Missy shares.

Just as Strong Roots creates solid foundations for homes throughout Dripping Springs, homeschooling is building a strong foundation for the Wilson children.

Levi works for a cybersecurity company and even won a contest that sent him to Apple’s headquarters. Violet gained business experience working at Life Anchored Home. Savanah and Violet run a crocheting business, teach others to crochet, and lead “Crochet for a Cause,” which donates handmade items to local organizations.

REAL-WORLD LEARNING

Recently, all four children pitched in to help when a Strong Roots client asked to move in early, demonstrating the work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit their parents have cultivated at home.

One particularly meaningful experience came when the family helped Scott’s mother transition into home care. The children applied skills learned working with their dad—installing ceiling fans and doorlocks, repainting, and replacing bathroom fixtures—to get their grandmother’s house ready to rent.

The best homeschooling memory? “Seeing the lightbulb go on when they realize they know how to read,” Missy says. “I got to do that with each child. Being able to witness that is such a gift.”

Whether at home or serving others, the Wilsons have found that their most important lessons happen when they’re together.

“Homeschooling bleeds into life,” Missy says. “We’re always teaching our kids.”

ADVICE FOR FAMILIES CONSIDERING HOMESCHOOL

Missy’s message to hesitant parents is simple: “You can do it because you’re the most invested in your child and you love them the most.”

She encourages families to tap into Dripping Springs’ supportive homeschool community, which offers co-ops, curriculum recommendations, and opportunities to connect.

Her goal? Raising lifelong learners who can teach themselves anything they want to know. And she believes any parent can do the same.
