‘The Krenkel Rose’

‘It has been a true blessing for me to watch it grow, year after year!’

This beautiful rose bush has its roots in Germany and traveled by train from New York to Birmingham about 75 years ago!

Owner Evie Krenkel in Cullman said, “It was given to my mother-in-law and father-in-law. He was from New York and his aunt was from Germany. When my husband and I bought our first house in Montgomery the rose bush was given to me in 1985. It never grew well in Birmingham.”

Krenkel said she’s had the rose bush for 40 years.

“I moved it from Montgomery, to Prattville, then Cullman. I have moved it three times in Cullman,” she said. “We built our last house, where it is now, eight years ago. It only blooms one time a year, around Mother’s Day to about June. I cut it back once a year after it blooms.”

Krenkel said she hopes when she’s gone, her children will want it.

“We don’t know the name of it so we call it The Krenkel Rose,” she smiled. “It has been a true blessing for me to watch it grow, year after year!”
