The Mistletoe Market Returns

Enjoy Holiday Cheer While Shopping for a Unique Treasure

For many folks, one of the best parts of the holiday season is finding unique places to shop. Not only is it great to score that special loved one a distinctive gift, but it’s also made even better when the whole experience is magical.

The Mistletoe Market is just that. Arbor Court Retirement Community at Alvamar has hosted this spectacular shindig for about a decade. Approximately fifty vendors set up shop on two of the building’s three floors. The center’s executive director, Tracy Harmon, and activity director, Susan Cook, organize everything. They plan, arrange, and run the festival every year. In fact, on Market Day, they have their own wares to peddle.

“I will be out in the parking lot, in my vintage camper,” smiles Harmon, “running my mobile boutique.”

The residents look forward to the Mistletoe Market for several reasons. First off, it’s always great to see the excited faces of shoppers in the building. Secondly, they do a lot of their own holiday shopping at the Market. And last but not least, some residents have booths selling handmade items. Arbor Court’s group of artisans called the Stitch Nitch will have their crocheted masterpieces on sale. The money they earn goes to benefit the Lawrence Pregnancy Center.

Variety is found throughout the booths. Items like handmade soaps, candles, jewelry, clothing, and home décor are mixed in with much more, including happy smiles from the residents, staff, and vendors.

Another wonderful aspect of the Market is the time, care, and manpower that go into making the decorations for this bright, beautiful event. Arbor Court’s maintenance staff and anyone else who can pitch in create a “wow” factor that seems to get a little more elaborate every year. There will be at least 50 decorated trees amongst the ornamentation. And to make things all the merrier, a pianist will play carols while shoppers hob knob. There will be food trucks, and, of course, St. Nick will put in an appearance.

There is always a good turnout, but Harmon wants to ensure the word gets out about this year’s Market, as the past three years it had to be put on hold due to Covid. “Everyone is really excited about the Mistletoe Market returning this year,” she says. “It is just so fun. There’s so much to see and experience. It’s a highlight in our year, as well as everyone who participates.”

The Mistletoe Market will be on December 9, 2023, at Arbor Court, 1510 St. Andrews Drive. To learn more about Arbor Court, go to ArborCourt-Lawrence.com.
