Meet Riley Stein – Ohio native and owner of The Modern Milkman. We had the opportunity to sit down with him recently to learn about his business and mission to provide high-quality, fresh and local products to consumers' doorsteps.
1. What is The Modern Milkman and when did you all open?
The Modern Milkman is a home delivery service for fresh and locally-produced milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, baked goods and more. We officially opened in August 2020, but home delivery had been on our minds since the fall of 2019. When COVID hit in the spring of 2020, we decided we really needed to do home delivery so we could get milk from Buckeye Country Creamery – a creamery owned in part by our family – to our customers' doorsteps. To make it worthwhile, we also knew that we didn't want to only deliver milk, so that is why we support other local businesses by carrying their products as well.
2. What products do you carry?
We carry a wide variety of fridge staple items such as milk, eggs, butter, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese, buttermilk, heavy cream, bread, cookies, sweets and more, as well as a wide variety of add-on products such as local honey, creamed honey, coffee, locally made dog treats and a handful of local seasonal items.
3. What local businesses do you partner with to carry this variety of products?
Green Field Farms, Nutrifresh Eggs, Tried & True Granola Co., Minerva Dairy, Buckeye Country Creamery, Bunker Hill Cheese, Velvet View Farmstead Yogurt, Troyer’s Home Pantry, Urban Honey Bee, Betsy’s Bake Shop and BoBell Cheese Company. All of our products are made locally here in Ohio; our goal is to partner with small local businesses that do not have their products at your local grocery store.
4. Where do you deliver?
We currently deliver to almost 40 zip codes, stretching from Wooster over to West Massillon, all the way up to Parma and everything in between, including Medina, Brunswick, Hinckley, Strongsville, Valley City and more.
5. Do you offer pickup in addition to delivery?
Yes, if you are not in our delivery area yet or if you would like to come out to the farm we are located at 11071 Easton Road Rittman, OH, 44270.
6. How many products can you get delivered and how often?
We offer a weekly delivery and three different order sizes: Full Share (your choice of any six products each week), Half Share (your choice of any four products each week) and Family Share (your choice of any eight products each week). Best of all, you don't have to commit to receiving the same products each week. You can choose which products you would like delivered for the week by logging in to your customer portal on our website. Also, if you are on vacation or simply have too much stashed in your fridge, you can donate your order to a local family in need through our Food Partnership Program. Instead of delivering your order to your house, we'll deliver it to one of Wooster Hope Center's families. We also offer the option to pause for a week. These changes can be easily made via text message or by logging into our customer portal.
