Over 3,500 runners competed in the event in 2023, and this year will be bigger and better. Before the race, which is organized by Beacon Events, the participants receive their very own Santa suit plus chip timed results, on the closed course on the streets of Asbury Park. The event, which attracts elves, fairies, and even Santa Claus himself, includes multiple afterparties around the boardwalk, including local favorites like The Stone Pony, The Wonder Bar, and Low Dive.
The event brings the entire community together. Last year, Pamela Miller, owner of The Max Challenge, Ocean brought 32 people to the event, who sported specially made Santa hats. “The Santa Run brings everyone together for the biggest holiday party ever,” Miller said. “Being around everyone in such a festive mood is contagious! Whether you are on the naughty or nice list, it’s a great way to start the season.” What Miller loves most is that there is no pressure. “Runners or walkers…all are welcome!”
This fun event is also for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales goes to Lunch Break to help support their mission to provide food, clothing, and fellowship to those in need around the holidays.
Jill Gwydir-Govel, Director of Development at Lunch Break detailed her nonprofit’s mission.
How did Lunch Break get started?
41 years ago, Norma Todd and the founding members of Lunch Break envisioned a compassionate community where members are cared for, nourished in both body and soul. They started by handing out sandwiches. Norma saw a need for food relief in the community. People were hungry. Over the years, it expanded. The mission began with addressing hunger among those struggling to make ends meet, offering immediate assistance while fostering hope for a brighter future.
Who do you serve?
Our primary service areas are Monmouth & Ocean Counties, with some programs crossing county lines. Individuals from other regions are never turned away for basics such as pantry staples, hot meals, and clothing. We went from a 12,000 square foot building to a 24,000 square foot building in the last two years. Every day we prepare approximately 450 meals. We also have our “Your choice” pantry, which provides groceries for families and individuals. We have a life skills program and our family promise program, which is our housing solution, and so many more programs and incentives. Ultimately, what we want to do is end the cycle of poverty, so that folks can be self-sustaining.
How can one help Lunch Break?
Over the last year, the pantry has seen a 70 percent increase in need.
We have multiple ways to get involved. We have a clothing drive, a backpack drive, food drives. You can volunteer your time or donate money, if you can. Monetary donations are greatly appreciated, because we can make a dollar go further, with our wholesale and buyer connections.
Does the Lunch Break staff take part in the Santa Run?
Yes, It’s one of our favorite events of the year. It’s just so great to see people out there running for Lunch Break! It raises a significant amount of money that we can use to help sustain our programs. It’s such a fun event!
The Santa Run sells out every year. Are there other festive ways to support Lunch Break?
