The Running Dermatologist

Sunshine State Dermatology's Adam S. Greenberg M.D. shares his passion for running and his prescription for healthy skin

For Board-Certified Dermatologist Adam S. Greenberg, M.D., FAAD, healthy skin isn't just about appearance, or the latest skincare product. Instead, it's about self-care that’s focused on overall well-being.

This philosophy shapes the way Dr. Greenberg treats and advises his patients at Sunshine State Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center. It also reflects his own experiences and lifestyle choices.

"I've always been active, whether it was playing sports in my youth or hitting the gym during my medical residency," he shared. However, as life got busier for him, prioritizing exercise became increasingly challenging. Then he was injured. "I herniated a disc in my late 30s, which made me reassess my fitness routine," Dr. Greenberg recalled. "I gradually eased back into exercise, starting with Pilates to strengthen my core, then progressing to weightlifting and cardio workouts."

Dr. Greenberg's getting-back-in-shape journey eventually led him to discover a true passion for running. "About five or six years ago, I started running outside and gradually built up my endurance," he explained. "Running has become a vital part of my daily routine, providing me with endorphins and energy to kickstart my day."

He is, however, acutely aware of the risks associated with outdoor exercise, particularly sun exposure. "Running outside in the summer can be challenging, especially when it comes to sun protection," he warned. For that reason, and because of his busy schedule, he usually begins before sunrise. But that doesn’t mean the doctor neglects essential elements of sun protection, such as the following:

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher whenever you go out, and reapply regularly. Sunshine State Dermatology recommends sunscreen, and other healthy skin products from Elta MD and Alastin.
  • Wear protective clothing and a hat. The company Coolibar makes clothing and accessories with sun-blocking UPF. Discover a range of products for men and women at coolibar.com. Dr. Greenberg is partial to long sleeve hoodies and longer pants in the cooler weather. Also wear a hat with UPF: Coolibar has a large selection of styles.
  • Stay hydrated. Dr. Greenberg stressed the significance of hydration for overall health and for skin health. He explained that proper hydration helps maintain the skin's elasticity and suppleness.  "I use a water belt and try to hydrate before the run,” he said. For longer runs and marathons he also takes an energy gel with him, for hydration and a nutritional energy boost.

In addition to exercise, Dr. Greenberg emphasizes the importance of nutrition in maintaining healthy skin. "I try to focus on protein-rich foods and limit my intake of carbohydrates, although I do have a sweet tooth," he admitted. "My wife makes me a nutritious smoothie every morning, which helps fuel my runs and keeps me energized throughout the day."

For Dr. Greenberg, running isn't just about physical health—it's also a way to connect with nature and experience moments of serenity. "I've had some incredible encounters while running, like spotting a bobcat crossing the trail or witnessing the sunrise on Legacy Trail," he shared. "Running allows me to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors while staying active and healthy."

As both a dermatologist and an avid runner Dr. Greenberg believes that taking care of your body from the inside out can have profound effects on your skin. He is passionate about educating others on the benefits of exercise for skin health–moderate exercise has been shown to alleviate oxidative stress, delay skin aging, and improve overall skin health.

Dr. Greenberg's journey serves as an inspiring example of how prioritizing fitness, sun protection, and nutrition can lead to not only healthier skin but also a more fulfilling and active lifestyle. Through his advocacy and personal experiences, he continues to empower his patients to take proactive steps towards achieving optimal skin health and overall well-being.
