The “Smile Maker” Dr Doug Jensen is a true long-time Texan who grew up in north Dallas and played football at Richardson High School. He began to pursue his first love, aviation when he was just sixteen. He flew his first solo flight over in Denton and obtained his pilot’s license at the age of seventeen. Further training in aviation was put on hold while he spent two years in South Korea as a missionary where he dedicated his entire time and attention to teaching gospel principles to the Koreans in their own language. When he returned however, he made a career change to dentistry. He first trained at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, and then became a specialist in orthodontics in San Antonio. He has lived in Prosper now for the last 13 years with his wife Cherie and daughter Liberty.
Dr Jensen is one of a mere handful of dual-specialized orthodontists in the entire United States who can claim the title as prosthodontist also. To put this into perspective, consider that in the USA there are approximately 200,000, 10,000 orthodontists, and just 3,500 prosthodontists practicing around the country. However, only twenty orthodontist/prosthodontist dual-specialists like Dr Jensen exist in the entire nation. This means, quite literally that there are fewer dual-specialists like Dr Jensen in the entire USA than there are men who have set foot on the moon!
Most everyone knows what an orthodontist is—a specialist in the treatment planning and biomechanics of tooth movement. Fewer people have come face to face with a prosthodontist, so this may be a little vague. As a prosthodontist, Dr Jensen further understands and appreciates the way your bite should come together for best efficiency and stability. This is one of the most tedious sides to the profession yet he has the patience to manage this complex aspect of dentistry. He is well-trained in the macro esthetics of the smile as well as the mini esthetics of each individual tooth. He understands the puzzle of missing teeth, which requires creative management such as implant-supported prosthetic teeth, crowns, veneers, or composite work. He is an expert regarding your jaw joints (TMJ’s) and knows how to create balance and harmony between the teeth and joints like no other dentist or specialist. Suffice it to say this blending of specialties provides a skill set virtually unheard of among dental professionals.
Art, science, and expertise aside, Dr Jensen earnestly works to provide an environment where comfort is paramount. He encourages patients to radiate their true personality through their smile, whether they are young or young-at-heart, and grow into themselves while looking at life with the confidence of a stunning smile.
The following treatment sequence will illustrate how both specialties are combined to create the perfect smile:
Photos 1 and 2: This young girl was unhappy with her smile due to severely discolored teeth, gaps between teeth, and a bite that doesn’t come together in the front.
Photos 3 and 4: A pre-treatment wax blue print served to improve the size, shape, and shade of her teeth using a temporary composite material.
Photos 5 and 6: Orthodontics was use to align her teeth, eliminate the gaps, and close the open bite.
Photos 7-9: Conservative porcelain veneers and crowns were used to complete the details of her smile display including her smile projection, her bite, and the shade of her teeth. Final result is a very natural looking, youthful smile that is the envy of many.
