In the heart of Mineral Wells, where the town’s very name pays homage to its legendary waters, Carol and Scott Elder have rekindled a century-old legacy of vitality. As owners of Crazy Water, the Elders have transformed what was once a forgotten relic into a thriving symbol of wellness, community, and revival.
“Every day is a new day,” says Carol, who purchased the business with her husband in 1999 when it was earning just $30 a day in store sales and deliveries. “We’ve learned so much about wellness and the significant part water plays in it.”
Today, Crazy Water is more than bottled mineral water—it’s the lifeblood of a wellness movement sweeping through Mineral Wells. Named the Wellness Capital of Texas, the community is uniting businesses, educators, and residents to promote holistic health. A local wellness committee hosts educational events, cooking classes, and festivals designed to empower people to make healthier choices starting with the simplest of all: water.
The Crazy Water Hotel, a $24 million community restoration project backed by 88 local investors, has become a cornerstone of this transformation. Once the original bar where Crazy Water was first served, the hotel now features 62 beautifully restored rooms, coffee and water bar, retail shops, restaurant and pub all built around the water that started it all. Even the coffee, cocktails, beer and natural syrups are made using Crazy Water.
Guests can experience mineral baths reminiscent of the 1800s at the Crazy Water Bath House and Spa, where the body’s natural detoxification is encouraged through the same mineral-rich water that made Mineral Wells famous. Wellness retreats, yoga in the garden, and community health initiatives all flow from the therapeutic power of the earth itself.
“Your water can be just as processed as cheese,” Carol explains with a smile. “But ours comes straight from the earth, the way Mother Nature intended. We’re not just drinking water. We’re rediscovering wellness, together.”
