Dared to Do Better

The Waypoint Difference: Family Values, Ethical Craftsmanship, and a Commitment to Hill Country Homes

For Michael Kastel, owner of Waypoint Roofing, family serves as the “why” behind everything he does. This philosophy shines through in his team’s commitment to clients, treating every individual with respect and keeping their best interests in mind, just as they would treat members of their own family.

Growing up in the trades, Kastel developed an early understanding of the standards that define quality building science and design. Although his father started a large-scale commercial renovation company when Kastel was only four, he never intended to take over that family business. He wanted to pursue a different path. However, a poor roofing experience on his own home in 2023, along with a challenge from the contractor that “if you could do better, I dare you to try,” led him to start Waypoint Roofing.

At first, Waypoint was simply a means to protect neighbors from the unethical practices and substandard work he had personally experienced. He dedicated himself to the craft, performing over 100 repairs on neighbors’ homes while working full-time in the tech industry with a newborn baby at home.

Word-of-mouth referrals began coming in so quickly that he realized he needed to hire a team. He eventually took on his new business full-time with a firm commitment to “deliver a better contracting experience to our Hill Country neighbors.” This dedication has earned Waypoint over 200 five-star reviews, a number-one Google rating, and the Best of Dripping Springs award for roofing excellence.

What makes Waypoint different? It is a process focused on providing the transparency that was missing in Kastel’s personal roofing experience. Every project begins with a 40-point inspection thoroughly reviewed with the client. These inspections are free and are encouraged every two to three years so a homeowner potentially has a jump on a problem before it becomes costly.

Waypoint also utilizes a proprietary app that allows clients to see real-time updates on installations and view documented inspections. “Many customers will tell us they’ve never had a contracting experience like ours before,” Kastel notes. “We call this the Waypoint Difference.”

Being family-owned and operated is an important piece of Waypoint’s journey. “It means every project is receiving my family’s personal investment,” Kastel says. He is present on every project at some point of the build, while his wife, Madison, supports their children, Blakely (3) and Jett (1), at home. ”Every project we commit to is receiving equal investment from both of us, just in different ways.”

When asked about future goals, Kastel says, “To give generously. It is our mission statement. We believe business is a vehicle for change. We look forward to more opportunities to serve this community through our talents and giving.”
