Gregg Matthus decided to make golf a career immediately after graduating from Ohio University, where he played on the golf team. In the four decades since, he’s been in the business throughout Florida and Ohio, and is now in his 19th season as the golf pro at Shady Hollow Country Club in Jackson Township.
Gregg says proper fundamentals and good training can help virtually any golfer get better. “When you improve one aspect of your game, three or four others improve as well,” says Gregg. “We as players sometimes make it hard. My advice is to keep it simple.”
Gregg likes to keep his game in shape during the off-season at 1899 Indoor Golf, the virtual golf establishment located on Everhard Road in Jackson Township. “It’s a great place to be surrounded by people with a passion for the game,” says Gregg.
A Golf Pro’s Tips for Playing Your Best:
Remember golf is about fundamentals. Your grip, posture, and stance are the foundations of your game. Get those solid and good things will follow.
Don’t just practice your drive. Everyone loves letting it rip on the driving range, but you should spend twice as much time on your short game. For every 30 minutes you spend practicing bombs, take 60 minutes to focus on putting and chipping.
Get your clubs fitted. It’s usually a free service when you buy a new set of clubs, so take advantage of it. Make sure the clubs you’re getting are the right fit for your swing.
