Although Garlan and Heather have owned and operated Southern Accents since 1999, the company’s roots reach back even further. The business was founded in 1969 by Garlan’s parents, who began collecting and selling architectural treasures from their family garage. Over the decades, what started as a small family operation has grown into one of the nation’s premier architectural salvage businesses while remaining true to its original mission of preserving pieces of history that might otherwise be lost.
The story of Southern Accents is also the story of the Gudger family.
Garlan and Heather first met while working at Southern Accents, later married, and even lived above the store as they raised their two sons, Tripp and Pierce. Today, along with their beloved dogs, Cleo and Titus, family continues to be at the center of everything they do. That personal connection is evident the moment customers walk through the front door. Visitors aren’t simply shopping—they’re stepping into a business built on generations of hard work, shared dreams and a genuine love for preserving the past.

Garlan and Heather have been featured in numerous publications and even appeared on the hit television show American Pickers with Mike Wolfe. Yet despite the accolades, their focus has never changed. Their greatest satisfaction comes from rescuing architectural treasures and helping customers give those pieces new life.

Visitors are surrounded by towering antique doors, beautifully aged mantels, stained glass windows, vintage sinks and tubs, ornate columns, reclaimed wood, architectural hardware, lighting, stair parts and countless one-of-a-kind pieces collected from across the country. The buildings themselves are part of the experience. One of the historic downtown structures once served as a hotel and later as a girls’ dormitory, adding another chapter to the rich history that surrounds the business. What began as a single 2,200-square-foot building has expanded into six downtown buildings totaling approximately 25,000 square feet. Just outside downtown, Southern Accents also operates a 50,000-square-foot reclaimed wood warehouse, allowing the Gudgers to preserve and house an incredible inventory unlike anything else in the Southeast.
For many longtime customers, a visit to Southern Accents has always been about more than finding the perfect piece. For years, guests were welcomed with a smile, offered complimentary cokes, the old glass bottles and sent on their way with two simple words that became part of the store’s identity: “Happy Hunting.” That spirit of Southern hospitality remains just as strong today.
Heather oversees the retail showroom and design side of the business, helping customers envision how reclaimed architectural elements can become beautiful focal points in today’s homes. Garlan spends countless hours traveling throughout the country locating and rescuing architectural pieces that deserve a second chance. Together, they combine knowledge, creativity and experience to help customers transform ordinary spaces into homes filled with character.
While professional designers, architects and builders regularly visit Southern Accents, the Gudgers say some of their favorite customers are everyday homeowners who simply come looking for inspiration. Saturdays often bring visitors from across Alabama and throughout the Southeast, many making Southern Accents a destination stop during weekend road trips. Some arrive searching for a single antique doorknob or vintage light fixture. Others leave with an entirely new vision for their home.
One of Garlan’s favorite reminders of why this work matters is a lion-head doorknob rescued from a historic Birmingham home. To many, it might appear to be just another piece of hardware. But to the Gudgers, it represents craftsmanship, artistry and the countless hands that have turned it over generations. Those are the details that make every piece worth saving.
