As an interior designer, a question I frequently get asked is, “What are the current trends or styles in home design today?” After 16 years creating beautiful spaces, the answer is: good design is timeless. Think of the Biltmore. It’s far from using the latest trends, but the rooms within are all beautiful and stylish even today. The rooms were cohesive, planned out and styled with a vision based on each inhabitant to the tiniest detail. That being said, there will always be “trends,” but a room with a beautiful color palette, well-planned space and accessories will always be timeless!
If you are seeking a truly timeless style for your home, you should look within. What colors are in your closet? Where have you traveled that inspired you? What is your lifestyle? The answers have more in common than you might think. With the answers you find within, you’ll have the vision to make a timeless home in your style. The great thing about the design today is that the options are truly endless to help achieve your dream room. 1) Variety. There are elements of all types of styles on the market right now. It’s no longer simply one or two styles that you are forced to select from. Today, you can truly select what you like and surround yourself with what you love.
2) Color. All colors are back! If you gravitate to a color, there’s a way to make it work for you in your home. All colors can be timeless if used with the right amount of saturation and in the right proportions with the rest of the palette. Creating a design that reflects the colors you love and are uniquely you is timeless and filled with style.
3) Character. There’s less of a desire to simply have what everyone else has in their home, or to create a space that feels like you walked into a retail store. Today, it’s about embracing your uniqueness and personality. The details make the space. So, feel free to add architectural and fabric trim to your home. Let your home be an extension of you and your family and tell yourstory. Achieving a great design can be done to look timeless and unique by looking within and answering some of the questions above; it’s all about you!
