To Create One's World in Any of the Arts Takes Courage

The Gift of Robert Harkness

Robert was a goal-oriented high achiever. From a young age, he achieved the highest rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts and went on to graduate high school with honors and acceptance into his dream school, The University of Southern California.

While in college, Robert studied in Florence, Italy for a semester. In Florence, he was inspired by some of the most amazing art. He later received his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and a Minor in Communication Design. From College, Robert was recruited to work as a designer and assistant Art Director for Playboy Magazine. In his three years of employment, he was recognized for his award-winning design work.

From Playboy, Robert was hired by Outside Magazine in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as Art Director. After working for Outside Magazine for a year, Robert founded Harkness Arts, where he offered freelance design and art. Robert took inspiration from the diverse landscape, cultural heritage, and laid-back vibe of New Mexico.

From 2015 to 2023, Robert created a vast amount of work. Even though he struggled to get his work exhibited and sold, Robert was known in his community for his oil paintings, printmaking, mural work, and drawings.

Roberts' last major project was a set of large exterior wall murals depicting New Mexico places and an interior mural of Taos Pueblo at the Nova Point Apartments in Albuquerque. His murals can also be viewed in Santa Fe, Pojoaque, and Albuquerque, showing vibrant colors and the unique beauty and culture that New Mexico offers.
