Top Tips To Get The Best From Your Summer Eyes

You spent how much time finding the right swimsuit this season? And you wouldn't leave home without your sunscreen and hat. But in your quest for the best summer accessories, have you really given much thought to protecting your eyes this season?

Dr. Trisha Rogers of 5280 Vision Care says the harsh year-round Colorado sun make it that much more important to protect your eyes.

"When buying sunglasses make sure they have a few important features. They should block 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays, have lenses made of polycarbonate or Trivex if they are used for sports, and be polarized for the crispest vision and no glare," Dr. Trisha says.

And if you are a busy student-athlete or adult weekend warrior and can't wear sunglasses, check out the new contact lenses available that darken in the sun. "You still get protection from the UV and better vision when you can’t wear your shades," Dr. Trisha says.

Dr. Trish offers these other tips for each health:

• Did you know that having a comprehensive eye exam is about so much more than just how clearly you see? While part of the exam is all about making sure you are seeing as clearly as possible, the rest is dedicated to checking the health of your eyes.  There are a lot of systemic diseases that can show up in your eyes such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, autoimmune disease and cancer. These are the reasons to have an eye exam even if you see great.

• If you have been avoiding the eye doctor because you hate the “air puff test” or having dilation drops used then we have good news for you!. We no longer do either. New technology lets us check your eyes without the drops that leave you blurry and light-sensitive.

• Are you tired of taking your reading glasses on and off?  There are now contacts that can correct both your distance and near vision. Ditch those readers!Have you heard of Computer Vision Syndrome? With all the hours we spend on screens for work, school and fun it can lead to eyestrain, headaches and other ailments. Wearing computer prescription glasses will keep your eye muscles relaxed and protect your eyes from harmful blue light.
