While many high school students are gearing up for football or basketball, Porter High School senior Hunter McMillan is carving out a different path. Instead of cleats or sneakers, he grabs his bean bags and wooden boards—dominating Houston’s competitive cornhole scene and proving he’s not your average teen athlete.
Hunter’s journey began in the backyard, playing casual games with his dad and neighbors. What started as a fun pastime quickly became a passion. As he practiced more, tossing bags with family and friends, he realized how much he enjoyed the sport—and how good he was getting. By 2024, Hunter was competing in local tournaments, going head-to-head with seasoned players and securing his first big win.
The bags may be soft, but Hunter’s toss is fierce as he shoots for success through a mix of dedication and fun. He practices often at home, working on precision shots like roll bags and airmails. While he doesn’t have an official coach, his dad and friends offer valuable tips to help him fine-tune his technique. One of his proudest moments came when he teamed up with his mom in a tournament and won a $700 prize—an unforgettable memory.
Though tournament winnings often go toward travel, gear, and entry fees, Hunter appreciates having a hobby that supports itself. Balancing school, cornhole, and family hasn’t always been easy, but his support system keeps him grounded. One of his favorite high school memories is getting to eat lunch with his mom every day.
After graduation, Hunter plans to attend Blinn College to pursue certification as an elevator technician, with hopes of joining his dad in business. He’s seen the opportunity and stability the trade offers and is eager to follow in his father’s footsteps.
With cornhole now recognized as a college sport, Hunter dreams of joining a collegiate team, earning his Pro card, and keeping the game a lifelong passion. Whether he’s on the boards, the golf course, or dreaming of being “knee deep in the water somewhere,” this Spartan is just getting started—and aiming high.
