Whether you’re after a designer handbag, the perfect pair of vintage jeans, or just a better way to shop sustainably, Gilbert’s secondhand scene has something for everyone. From trendy consignment shops to dig-worthy thrift stores, Gilbert is packed with gems - you just have to know where to look.
Local wardrobe stylist and image consultant Jackie Wheeler, owner of Jackie Style Imaging, has been thrift and consignment shopping since high school. Now, she helps clients build their wardrobes with a mix of second-hand finds. “I love finding unique pieces, I love saving money - and I love that these clothes aren’t going to end up in a landfill,” she says.
Here are a few of her go-to spots in and around Gilbert:
Turn Style Consignment
One of Jackie Wheeler’s top picks, Turn Style offers a curated mix of gently used designer pieces and everyday wear with a more classic, timeless feel. “If you’re looking for bags, their pricing is usually better than other consignment stores,” she notes. Shoppers can expect quality items that lean more polished than trendy, making it a great spot for building a lasting wardrobe. Bonus: Turn Style often has a surprisingly strong selection of home décor and furniture worth browsing.
Uptown Cheapskate
Trendy and teen-friendly, Uptown Cheapskate is a great spot for scoring what’s in style right now. “They’re great if you’re looking for what’s currently trending,” says stylist Jackie Wheeler, who points shoppers here for on-trend clothing, shoes, and accessories. While the selection is plentiful and curated with current styles in mind, Jackie notes that prices can run higher than other local spots. Her tip? Keep an eye out for sales and markdowns to score the best deals.
Deseret Industries
Tucked into the corner of the intersection at Val Vista and Williams Field, Deseret Industries is Jackie’s go-to for home goods and décor. “Every time I go in, I find something fabulous,” she says. This clean, well-organized thrift store spans over 54,000 square feet and offers budget-friendly furniture, housewares, and clothing. Worth the short drive, the Gilbert location is a hidden gem with purpose—and plenty of unique finds.
Goodwill
Gilbert is home to several Goodwill locations, and while they can be hit-or-miss, stylist Jackie Wheeler recommends stopping in regularly to score unexpected treasures. Inventory changes daily, so frequent visits increase your chances of finding something special—whether it’s a vintage statement piece, designer denim, or a unique home décor item. With a little patience and a good eye, Goodwill can yield standout pieces at unbeatable prices. “You never know what you’ll find,” Jackie says, “and that’s the fun of it.”
What to Know Before You Go
According to Jackie, the best way to thrift successfully is to start in your own closet. “Figure out what you actually need,” she says. “If you know you’re missing black shoes or a sleeveless dress, focus your search on those categories.”
She also suggests:
- Don’t buy for the label—buy what fits and fits now
- Inspect everything carefully for damage or stains
- Wear a tank top so you can try pieces on over your clothes (especially important at Goodwill, which no longer offers fitting rooms)
- Know each store’s return policy—many only offer store credit or none at all
And for those looking to sell at consignment stores? “Make sure your items are clean, current, and ready to go on the floor,” Jackie says. “Some stores prefer clothes on hangers, but most stores just appreciate items that are well-presented.”
Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or brand new to consignment shopping, Gilbert offers a stylish, sustainable way to refresh your wardrobe—and maybe even discover your new favorite piece.
