It starts with a sketch – one line of pencil lead that flourishes into a masterpiece of color, imagination, and dreams turned reality. Flowers, fabric, and functionality are the precipice of the design, but that is not where the list ends. AT NCISD, the halls are a buzz with the excitement and magic of discovery, all thanks to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program! Students embark on enchanting journeys through a world of electives, uncovering hidden passions while gaining hands-on experience and skills that prepare them for the adventures of college and careers.
Leading the charge in two of these sensational CTE programs are the visionaries of creativity and inspiration: Charlene “Cheri” Loving, the NCHS Agriculture Science Teacher and Future Farmers of America (FFA) Advisor, and Kaley Ihle, the captivating Fashion Design Teacher. With their guidance, students travel to regional Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) conferences as well as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and return home with prestigious awards. These mentors inspire and encourage students to step out of their comfort zones and prepare for their futures.
In both programs, creativity blossoms like fairy tales unfolding on parchment. Visions turn into research, critical thinking, and meticulous planning as students bring their craft to life. In the realm of fashion design, students are introduced into the intriguing world of graphic design and earn an Adobe Illustrator certification, a sparkling gem to put on a resume. Meanwhile, floral design students explore the myriad avenues of FFA, gaining expertise in horticulture, wildlife and small animal management, welding, and advanced animal and plant sciences. These alluring subjects prepare students to earn their Level 1 and 2 State Certifications through the Texas State Floral Association.
One particularly adroit student, Makiah Nelson, combined her passion for floral and fashion design to create a stunning dress made of flowers. With guidance from Mrs. Loving, she sketched her dream design and selected the perfect florets. As part of the curriculum, Makiah had to learn how to calculate necessary order amounts, place said orders, and budget accordingly. Using nature’s own materials, she molded the design with moss, chicken wire, and soaked foam, strategically applying fresh pompon to transform her vision into a breathtaking reality.
In Ms. Ihle’s fashion design class, students learn to read and design patterns, master sewing machines, and develop Pinterest-worthy designs that fit not only for royalty. Through FCCLA, they gain field experience in community service, public speaking, and sharing their entrepreneurial spirit. Students create a store brand for their final project, presenting astonishing creations to peers and judges from all over Texas. Back on campus, these projects are showcased in the library. Ms. Ihle is currently working on an exciting year-end fashion show where students’ original designs will take the stage and become Instagram-worthy sensations.
