Patrick Kaufmann, a junior at the Washington International School and Potomac resident, is brightening lives through his nonprofit, Valentines By Kids. More than 40,000 children across the DC/MD/VA area participate in the program, which Patrick runs from his home.

The concept is simple: Patrick encourages schools to have students create vibrant Valentine’s Day cards. These heartfelt creations are delivered to other children, patients in hospitals, residents in long-term care facilities, and homebound clients of DC-based Food and Friends. What began in 7th grade with 300 children has now expanded to over 175 schools, supported by its new 501(c)(3) status.

The initiative spreads warmth and joy to communities across the nation. Patrick and the children are helping make the world a brighter, more compassionate place. Their pride in crafting each card is surpassed only by the happiness it brings to recipients, perfectly reflecting the motto: “Made by hand – felt by hearts.”
