The Venice Community Center enters a new era as the Venice Institute for Performing Arts Management (VIPAM) takes over its management. The transition follows a competitive selection process by the City of Venice and comes with an ambitious goal: build on the center's legacy while expanding its role in community life.
"We are thrilled to partner with the City of Venice as we begin this new chapter for the Venice Community Center," said VIPAM Executive Director Derek Blankenship. "Our goal is to create a vibrant space that brings residents, businesses and organizations together while fostering connection, engagement and civic pride."
While much of the work will happen behind the scenes, visitors will notice improvements to the building's exterior. Inside, the ballroom and stage are being modernized with new lighting, followed by enhanced audio and video capabilities, thus creating a more versatile venue for everything from weddings and galas to meetings, expos and community performances.
VIPAM also plans to make event planning easier by offering concierge-style services, connecting renters with caterers, production support and experienced event staff. Rather than simply renting a room, organizations and individuals will be able to choose as much—or as little—assistance as they need.
Supporting that expanded vision, VIPAM is hiring dedicated Community Center staff while also drawing on the expertise of its Venice Performing Arts Center team. "It's also a great opportunity to utilize and grow our apprentice program," Blankenship added.
Looking ahead, Blankenship hopes to build on the Venice Community Center's long-standing role as a gathering place by expanding the range of events and experiences it can offer—from high school proms and nonprofit fundraisers to neighborhood meetings and community celebrations.
"We fully intend to make it an even more vibrant and valuable community asset that everyone can be proud of," he said.
