If you’ve ever experienced the holidays in Boulder, you know there’s nothing else quite like it; from snowcapped mountains to the twinkling lights dotting the neighborhood, magic seems to fill the air this month with holiday cheer. If you’re new here, welcome, you’re in for a real treat! To help everyone make the most joy of this holly jolly season, we’ve curated a list of our favorite December activities.

Shop Local

Whether you’re treating yourself or a loved one to some sparkling accessories from Todd Reed, specialty chocolate or new outdoor gear at one of the 20+ stores located in the center of historic downtown, Pearl Street is “the place” to find something for everyone on your list.

Take in the Boulder Star

While it shines bright from Veteran's Day through the second week of January, the Boulder Star not only symbolizes hope, it also celebrates the season. The best place to admire the lights is from afar. Since there is no designated trail on the steep terrain, for human, land and wildlife safety, the city is asking residents not to hike to the star. Some of the best views in town include:

  • The Boulder Overlook off Highway 36
  • Cherryvale Trailhead
  • Chautauqua
  • North Boulder Park

Plan a Day Date

Whether you’re out and about as a family or spending one-on-one time with your bestie, there’s always something fun to do. Take a few hours to admire thought-provoking pieces of art at the Museum of Boulder and BMoCA then settle down for a good conversation over tea service at Hotel Boulderado or Dushanbe Tea House.

Rally the Troops

Gather your close friends and family for a leisurely weekend brunch at a local classic like Snooze, Lucile’s Creole Cafe or The Buff then go take a hike, literally. Head out on an easy, family-friendly hike to make the most of Boulder’s bright and sunny winter days at Red Rocks Trail at The Peoples’ Crossing, Marshall Mesa or Wonderland Lake Loop. (Don’t forget to pack sunscreen and chapstick!) Cap off the day by toasting to the spirit of the season at one of our food and beverage halls, Avanti or Rosetta Hall.

Carve out Special Time

Book some much-needed “me time” with a facial at Alchemy Face Bar or a massage at the St. Julien Spa, which allows visiting guests to indulge in its steam room and sauna.

To celebrate the season with your significant other, plan a special night out in whatever way seems “just right” to you as a couple. This might mean dining at one of Boulder’s nine MICHELIN-recognized restaurants in town—Frasca Food and Wine, Blackbelly Market, Bramble & Hare, Zoe Ma Ma, etc., or seeing a show at the Boulder Ballet or Boulder Phil.

Make Life Easier During a Hectic Season

Remember you don’t have to do it all. Pick up some pre-made goodies at Lucky’s, Whole Foods or Dedalus to take the edge off hosting responsibilities.

Take Time to Give Back

Your generosity can help lower-income families celebrate the season.

Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFFA)

Financial and food donations assist those facing food insecurity. Host a food drive or drop off items from their shopping list or Amazon wish list. EFFA.org

Family to Family (F2F) Holiday Program

Donated gift cards allow parents and caregivers to shop for presents for themselves or their children. F2F serves individuals in child protection, foster care, adolescent and adult protection. BoulderCountyFamilyToFamily.org

Casa de la Esperanza Learning Center

Through the help of donated presents, school supplies, winter clothing and grocery gift cards, Casa de la Esperanza helps families of seasonal workers employed in local dairies, farms and greenhouses on a tight budget gain a leg up during the colder season.
