Tips to Avoid Wedding Day Regret

A seasoned wedding planner’s guide to creating a day that reflects your love—without stress, pressure, or regrets.

As a local wedding planner with over 17 years of experience, my goal is to help couples create a wedding day they’ll cherish—without regrets. A wedding is more than a celebration; it’s a deeply personal tradition, a gathering of loved ones to witness and honor your commitment.

Planning such a significant event can be overwhelming—both emotionally and financially. I understand this well—not just as a planner, but as someone who has been with my husband for 16 years. To help ease the process, here are my top tips to ensure you walk away from your big day with only joyful memories.

1. Explore Your Options—Make It Your Own

Your love story is unique, and your wedding should reflect that. The industry has evolved beyond rigid traditions, allowing for creativity and personalization. Whether you’re deciding between flowers or candles, a white dress or a bold color, plated dinner or buffet—take the time to explore what resonates with you as a couple.

Stay organized with a budget and timeline, and focus on who you truly want to celebrate with. Most importantly, enjoy the planning process—it doesn’t have to be stressful! Give yourself permission to let go of perfection and lean into what feels meaningful.

2. Consider Hiring an Experienced Planner or Day-Of Coordinator

One of the biggest stress relievers is having professional help. A wedding planner or day-of coordinator ensures everything runs smoothly, allowing you and your guests to fully enjoy the moment.

Durango is a popular destination for weddings, and with nearly 85% of my clients living out of town, having someone local to coordinate with vendors can save time, money, and unnecessary stress. A planner is not just an organizer—they are a mediator, negotiator, and problem solver.

Having experienced vendors helps minimize stress, so vet them thoroughly through reviews, recommendations, and clear communication.

3. Don’t Let Others’ Opinions Overshadow Your Vision

While you want your guests to have a great time, remember—this is your day. If you love ice cream more than cake, serve ice cream. If you want a Star Wars, Harry Potter, or fairy-themed wedding, go for it! Personal touches—like custom napkins featuring your pets or signature drinks named after them—make your wedding truly yours.

You’ll never regret being authentic, but you might regret giving in to pressure. Tune into what excites you, and trust your instincts.

4. Eat, Drink, and Take Care of Yourself

A wedding day can feel like a marathon and a sprint! Assign your best man or maid of honor to make sure you eat, stay hydrated, and pace yourself—not just with alcohol. You want to remember your big day, not feel sick or exhausted.

You’ve spent months planning—don’t forget to enjoy it! Carve out quiet moments for yourself to breathe and take it all in.

5. Spend Meaningful Time Together on Your Big Day

You don’t have to wait until the aisle to see each other. Many couples opt for a private vow exchange before the ceremony, creating an intimate moment before the whirlwind begins. If public vows feel daunting, consider alternative unity ceremonies like lighting a candle or pouring wine together.

Intentional moments like these become some of the most treasured memories. Find ways to connect throughout the day, even for just a few quiet seconds.

6. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Have a plan—and plan to be flexible. Things may not go exactly as expected, and that’s okay. Whether it’s unexpected weather or minor hiccups, keep perspective: what matters most is the commitment you’re making.

For example, we once had a ceremony with two flower-girl sisters, about 5 and 3 years of age. They were perfect for the role. When it was time to walk down the aisle, the older sister went first, dropping her flower petals. The younger, following behind, began picking them up and putting them into her basket. Totally unplanned—but so innocent and cute. It’s part of their wedding story that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Let go of control and trust the beauty in imperfection.

7. Capture the Memories

Hiring a professional photographer and videographer may be a big investment, but it’s one you’ll never regret. With so much happening on your wedding day, you’ll cherish having high-quality photos and videos to relive those moments for years to come.

Make sure to also ask your photographer to capture candid moments—those unscripted laughs, happy tears, and small in-between glances are the heart of the day.

Final Thoughts

In the end, the most important thing is to love yourself and each other—because that’s what brought you to this day in the first place. Embrace the joy, be present, and plan a wedding that reflects your love story, free of regrets.

Happy planning—and cheers to your happily ever after!
