Walking into the brand-new SPENGA studio in Loveland doesn’t feel like walking into a gym—it feels different. Exciting. Better. From the pristine white walls to the clean, citrusy smell, SPENGA is a full experience, and one you definitely don’t want to miss. “That’s ‘SPENGA clean,’” Kelly Hater laughs when asked about the amazing smell.

Kelly, owner of the SPENGA Loveland franchise, says that a trip to SPENGA is like getting a “boutique spa feel, even though you’re working out.” And it’s easy to see why—everyone is friendly, the facility is gorgeous in its minimalist white and green, and the accommodations are truly top-notch. You’re not just getting a work out at SPENGA, you’re joining a community.

But what is SPENGA? Let me break it down for you ... SPENGA is a combination of Spin, Strength, and Yoga. Get it? Twenty minutes of each different workout all benefit the important yet different parts of fitness. “You’re getting the three pillars of fitness—cardio, strength, and flexibility,” Kelly testifies to why SPENGA has it all.

It all starts with 20 minutes of spinning, which gets your blood pumping and heats up the body. “We picked spin over something like running or rowing because it’s easier on your joints but still gets your heart rate up,” Kelly explains. Spin sessions are based on power. They measure how fast you’re pedaling and how much resistance you have on the bike, all to create your sweet spot—a measure of how much power you’re outputting. Instead of having a number to hit with your resistance, your SPENGA instructor challenges you to hit “zones” (which there are four of) and to find a resistance that’s comfortable for you. Follow along on the leaderboard in the spin studio, or make the workout your own and get in your own groove!

After 20 minutes of spin, you move from the bikes to the floor for 20 minutes of strength training. “Strength is needed for body composition improvement ... so, increasing your lean muscle mass,” Kelly states about the second portion of a SPENGA session. Everything is tailored to provide you with the best experience at the studio, including where you’re situated while you’re working out. You’re provided with a bike number when you sign in for the day, and that bike number is then the station number you go to in the open part of the studio for strength. That station is outfitted with everything you will need—from weights to BOSU balls and more. The exercises used during strength training are created by SPENGA corporate, but the instructors walk among participants while they work out, helping with form and always ready with encouraging words. More important, each exercise is first demonstrated in person by your instructor, then the exercise is also played on a screen above the workout space, along with a timer to track your sets.

Once your strength session is done, it’s time to pull down those mats and finish up with some yoga. “Yoga is ideal for mobility in people’s lives … being able to move and live a long, healthy life.” Yoga is going to stretch those muscles you just worked, and give you more flexibility. It also increases circulation, improves posture and alignment, and promotes recovery. And after 40 minutes of higher intensity workouts, coming together and breathing on the mats, focusing on recovery and flexibility is key. With a combination of poses for strength, flexibility and recovery, yoga is bound to leave your body feeling well-loved after this multifaceted experience.

Put simply, SPENGA pulls out all the stops when it comes to working out. “You need to work your heart and your muscles, and you need to keep your joints healthy—all of which is what we do here,” says Kelly about each session. And that’s what makes SPENGA so unique. While other workout studios focus on one thing only and miss out on key aspects of becoming the best version of you, SPENGA gives you everything in one bite-sized, hour-long session.

Kelly compares opening a SPENGA studio to the signature workout itself—it keeps her moving and always on her toes. “We’re getting great feedback—ways we can help the community and offer more. We’re already partnering with a physical therapist for pelvic floor strength because people were asking about it,” she says of an upcoming workshop. Kelly also hopes to do charity sessions to give back to the Greater Loveland area itself—where a certain charity is selected and then all sign-up proceeds are donated to that cause.

Haven’t found an exercise studio that feels just right to you yet? You should definitely give SPENGA a shot. It’s a one-stop-shop for all of your fitness needs, and will leave you feeling fulfilled without overwhelming you. Book a session today!

Kelly Hater
Owner

Kelly, who owns both SPENGA Loveland and The Trainer’s Spot, went to UC for exercise science and health promotion, so opening a franchise was a no-brainer for her. Kelly has been a personal trainer since her college days, and started her own business at 22. “I’m about growing myself, so I really like growing other people and pushing them to be their best.”

“It’s not about comparing yourself to anyone, it’s about what makes you happy and what makes you better,” she explains of her own goals and inspiration in the industry. With a husband and two kids, Kelly is a total boss whose hard work is visible in everything she does, including this SPENGA location. “I’ve always been into fitness and health, and I feel like fitness is such a mental help, too,” Kelly explains about her personal passion for mental health awareness. She has also dabbled in bodybuilding, even going as far as competing after she had two kids! While not still pursuing that avenue, Kelly admits with a smile, “Never say never! That spark may go off again.”

“We don’t want the workouts to be stressful. We want to nurture all kinds of people. SPENGA is a safe, healthy and clean place to do that.”
