What Does "Investing" Mean to You?

Koss Olinger

Investing in yourself and your future requires discipline and commitment, whether it's your health, relationships, career, or your finances. When it comes to investing financially, many people think of retirement, but the idea of retirement planning can feel overwhelming. Instead, try to reframe your mindset and think of retirement as the longest vacation you will ever take. You invest time and money into planning a vacation because you're excited about the possibilities ahead, and retirement planning should be no different.

Start by asking yourself three key questions: when do you want to retire, what will you do in retirement, and how much will it cost? These answers provide a great starting point for your plan. Once you've created a clear roadmap and decided on solid long-term investments to grow your wealth, it is important to stick with them. This requires discipline and commitment. The hard part is staying focused on saving and investing your earnings to maximize your experience during retirement. When your investments and goals are aligned, day-to-day variations in the market become nothing more than background noise.

We recommend you start by investing time into planning your financial future. Determine how much money you need to invest to reach your goals, and then make investment and asset allocation decisions accordingly. The specific asset allocation decisions become easy once the planning is in place. If you're feeling daunted, a fee-based fiduciary can help you build a plan and guide you through the process to ensure you're investing wisely to accomplish your goals.

FDR: Fitness Driven Results

Investing in yourself through exercise is a multifaceted investment that yields numerous physical, mental, and social benefits. It is a proactive step toward leading a happier and healthier lifestyle. Multiple studies have shown that exercise benefits you mentally and physically, but it can also help your pocketbook as you get older.

Preventative Health: Regular exercise can reduce the risks of developing various chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and others.

Reduced Medical Expenses: Exercise contributes to overall better health, which may lead to fewer doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescription medications.

Lower Insurance Premiums: Check to see if your insurance company offers discounts to policyholders who exercise regularly. Also, inquire whether your employer offers programs that will cover a percentage of gym or exercise memberships.

Increased Productivity: Regular exercise has been shown to improve cognitive function, concentration, and overall productivity.

Overall, while there may be upfront costs associated with fitness memberships the long-term savings on healthcare expenses far outweigh these initial expenditures. By adopting a consistent exercise routine, you not only improve your quality of life but also safeguard your financial well-being.

Fitness Driven Results’ programs are designed with this in mind, by teaching and maintaining correct form during exercise, managing proper intensity levels, changing its program every 6 to 12 weeks, and by creating a safe and fun place to exercise for all fitness levels.

The Home Place: What is your investment level?

Homeownership is a major part of the American Dream.  Once you decide to invest in a house, your next decision is to choose an investment level that will enhance your life and turn your house into a home.

Whether you build or purchase an existing home, you are acquiring an appreciable asset.  Your home will be your safe, healthy, happy place where you will live your best life.  Higher quality and timeless design are much better long-term investments.  Consider better quality cabinetry, tile, and flooring as part of your investment that will last.

Make your home interior an investment in you.  Your living and dining areas are places to relax and enjoy with family and friends. Surround yourself with things you love.  Incorporate special items and family heirlooms into your home décor.  Choose quality pieces of furniture that will serve you well.  Consider some items as investment pieces that can be passed down.  Excellent, high-quality hand-knotted area rugs are a good choice.  They will enhance your surroundings and become heirlooms.

Your bedrooms should reflect you and be conducive to relaxation and quality sleep. You will spend a lot of time here, so make it special! Remember your kitchen is a gathering place and the heart of your home.  High quality cabinetry, beautiful tile and countertops enhance your investment and hold up well over time. Make your bathrooms an oasis where you can relax and melt away stress.  Make them functional, comfortable, and timeless.  Quality tile, fixtures, cabinets, and flooring are key.

Quality lighting is important in all areas of your home. Be sure you have enough and the right kind.

Your home is an investment in you!

Club Synergie: Beauty Beyond Trends

“If I invest in myself, what does that look like?”

"Should I get Botox, filler?" In a world where Instagram filters reign supreme and TikTok trends dictate our beauty ideals, the pressure to measure up can feel insurmountable. But fear not, fellow beauty enthusiasts, we are here to explore what your needs are.

Yes, studies have shown the existence of "pretty privilege," is measurable, and meeting societal beauty standards can open doors to higher-paying jobs and smoother social interactions. While society rewards adherence to these standards, it also can stigmatize those who invest in their appearance.

Can I talk to an industry insider without someone trying to sell me a mud mask or a facelift? Here are the top two questions we ask in the esthetic checklist we offer for free on our website clubsynergie.com

1. How do I want to be perceived, and what about my appearance do I want to change to fit into others' perceptions?

2. Are these changes because of the newest beauty fads, or do they represent a long-term desire?

The aim here is to help individuals seeking esthetic work thoroughly evaluate their motivations before making a decision. Like any INVESTMENT, you need to pause. Consult with a qualified esthetic provider and have an open conversation with those who have had these procedures done about their experience.

As an esthetician and owner of Club Synergie, Natural Skin and Body Spa, I've witnessed firsthand the tumultuous journey of beauty standards and mishaps. Yet, amidst the chaos, one truth remains: investing in oneself is never out of style.

The returns on this investment are immense, leading to a more positive outlook, improved relationships, and greater resilience in the face of life's challenges. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure. It’s like an investment. The costs of treating preventable illnesses continue to be “staggeringly high,” estimated to be over $700 billion annually in the USA alone. 1 High body mass index, high blood pressure, and diabetes account for most preventable illnesses. 1 in 4 people die from a preventable disease. A high proportion of illness and death is preventable; yet, we don’t do a particularly good job of investing in prevention. The challenge we face is “nurturing investment in avoiding poor health, rather than in treatment that gratifies those who are cured.” 2 However, as that statement implies, an effective treatment may come too late—if at all. We cannot keep rolling the dice hoping that science will cure everything that ails us.

From an individual standpoint, out-of-pocket spending grew 6.6% to $471.4 billion in 2022 alone, 3 in addition to the costs for health care coverage. Not surprisingly, individual spending varies widely by age group. On average, persons 65 and older spent “$22,356 in 2020, over 5 times higher than spending per child ($4,217) and almost 2.5 times the spending per working-age person ($9,154).” 4 As we age, the more health problems we confront. Like a vehicle, eventually, parts will fail due to wear and tear. But we cannot simply trade ourselves in for a newer model. And just because you are a younger model, don’t think you will be able to keep handing these costs off to your employer. In 2022, the average annual premiums for employer-sponsored coverage were $7,911 for single coverage and $22,463 for family coverage – and rising annually. These trends are simply unsustainable.

We must change our focus from treatment to prevention. We are all different genetically, which makes effective prevention complex. As we healthcare professionals have learned, but some are loathe to admit, one size does not fit all and there is no silver bullet. A healthy, vibrant lifestyle requires more than just exercise and a daily array of pharmaceuticals. We all need and deserve a more comprehensive, individualized, targeted approach to prevention and wellness. Does spending $1 (an ounce) on disease prevention save $16 (16 ounces per pound) of cure? None of us truly knows. Some experts argue the average return is between $4-10. That’s not a bad investment, as one could easily argue that your prevention spend could generate life-long dividends. So don’t wait or delay. Increase your returns, and invest in your future health today.
