What ‘Systems‑Based Physical Therapy’ Really Means

Learn what that means and how it can help chronic pain

Beyond “Body‑Part” Physical Therapy

Most people are used to a body‑part model:

  • Knee hurts? Treat the knee.

  • Neck hurts? Treat the neck.

  • Pelvis hurts? Treat the pelvis.

That approach works for some short‑term issues. But for many people with chronic, layered problems, it isn’t enough.

At R3 Physio in Keller, we use a systems‑based model. That means we look at how different parts of you interact, not just the loudest area.

What We Look At in a Systems‑Based Evaluation

Instead of isolating one joint, we ask how your whole system is working together. That includes:

  • Spine and pelvis: How your center organizes movement

  • Hips, knees, feet: How you interact with the ground

  • Ribs and breathing: How you support and pressurize your trunk

  • Jaw and airway: How head and neck alignment influences pain and posture

  • Scars and surgeries: C‑sections, abdominal, pelvic, and chest surgeries

  • Gut and pelvic health: Digestive, abdominal, and pelvic floor contributions

  • Nervous system: How “on guard” or over‑protective your body has become

We then connect that map back to what you care about: walking without limping, sleeping through the night, lifting kids, dancing, running, or simply getting through the day without constant pain.

Why It Takes Longer – And Why It’s Worth It

A true systems‑based evaluation can’t be done in 10 minutes. That’s why our initial visits are typically 75–90 minutes, one‑on‑one.

We use that time to:

  • Listen to your full history and story

  • Examine how different regions move and support each other

  • Test how your system responds when we change one area at a time

  • Build a plan that fits both your body and your real life

The goal isn’t to give you more random exercises. It’s to target the right interventions to the right places, so your system has a chance to reorganize rather than just cope.

If you’ve tried traditional physical therapy in Northlake or Fort Worth and felt like no one was putting the whole picture together, systems‑based care at R3 Physio may be a better fit.
