In conventional medicine, the word "normal" is used far too often and usually as a definitive conclusion rather than a starting point.
“Your labs are normal.”
“Your symptoms are normal for your age.”
“It’s probably just anxiety.”
“It’s just a part of getting older.”
Just because something is common does not mean it is normal…or healthy for that matter. Many people go through their days thinking their symptoms are just a new obstacle in their life, but they are often signals of an underlying imbalance that is being dismissed. Symptoms could include but are not limited to:
Persistent fatigue or low motivation
Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
Stubborn weight gain or inability to lose weight despite effort
Poor sleep or waking unrefreshed
Changes in sexual health
Mood changes, anxiety, or irritability
Loss of muscle tone or strength
Feeling “off,” disconnected, or unlike yourself
Aging is inevitable; decline is not. Too often patients are told that the weight gain, lack of sexual wellness, fatigue, brain fog, etc., are “just a part of getting older.” Over time, many begin to believe the notion themselves and stop speaking up due to patterns of rejection. But your symptoms are real. Your experience matters!
Most lab-level reference ranges are built on a population average. This is a factor in why so many people are told that their labs are “normal.” For example, peak testosterone levels in a male should be 800-1000 ng/dL. The reference range for total testosterone is 264-916 ng/dL. Such a broad range is unfair and deeply uneducated. But this is our new reality. If a 16 year old male has a total testosterone level of 311 ng/dL, is that normal? Is that a normal level for a 50 year old male? Because according to reference ranges and traditional physicians, it is. With microplastics, toxins, poor nutrition access, and more, it’s not a surprise that hormone lab levels would be so low. But hey, it’s in the range!
Conventional medicine is great at diagnosing common diseases and managing acute illnesses with prescription medications. However, traditional medicine is not designed for early intervention. More often than not, if you don’t have a perfect list that meets common disease criteria, you hear ‘everything’s fine,’ even when your body is telling you a different story.
In anti-aging and integrative medicine, symptoms and concerns are viewed through different lenses. Rather than relying on isolated lab values, broad reference ranges, and quick symptomatic fixes, integrative medicine evaluates patterns and trends and considers how the patient is feeling and their lifestyle experience. Integrative medicine is here to discover the root cause and focus on early intervention.
This model of care is to support the body in functioning at its highest ability. That means helping to restore energy, preserve metabolic health, improve cognitive clarity, and maintain physical and emotional resilience. True health is not measured by lab ranges but by how well someone moves through their life.
When patients feel connected to their bodies again, that’s when they recognize themselves in the mirror and feel motivated, strong, and mentally sharp. That’s a powerful indicator of internal balance and can be the difference between surviving and truly thriving. This represents a fundamentally different standard of care than what most people have been taught to expect.
Feeling vibrant, strong, and like yourself is not unrealistic. It’s not indulgent. And it’s not something you have to earn by suffering first. It is what healthcare should be aiming for. Normal isn’t the same as being healthy anymore, and you deserve care that honors the difference.
