We recently sat down with Brandon Grissom, a Highlands Ranch pastor, musician, father, and author whose journey has taken him from country music and Nashville to ministry, heartbreak, and an unexpected new beginning. Through his first book, When Tomorrow Stopped, Brandon shares the lessons, faith, and hope that helped him navigate profound loss, and find his way into a new chapter.
Hi Brandon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a pastor by way of musician. I grew up in rural Oklahoma, where my dad ran a country dancehall. At the age of 13, I started playing music in his bar. As a teenager, I recorded my first album and made trips to Nashville, handing out cassette tapes on Music Row in the ‘90s. I think I played every bar on Broadway.
Then, in my teens, I had a life-changing encounter with Jesus. That moment redirected my path, and I traded honky-tonk for worship music. It led me to Willow Creek, a mega-church in Chicago, where I led worship for many years. I released several records, toured across the country, and even had one album hit No. 2 on the iTunes gospel charts. But after those whirlwind years, I settled into local church work. My kids were born in Chicago, and it was a beautiful season for our family.
In 2016, we moved to Highlands Ranch, where I still live today. Eventually, we planted Revolution Church in Lone Tree with some friends. In 2020, my world turned upside down. My wife, Beki, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She fought bravely for years, but the last six months were brutal, as my kids and I cared for her every need. Losing her after 22 years of marriage was devastating. It was a hard road, one that left deep scars.
There is so much more to say, but let me skip to the good part!
Today, I’m happily remarried to Angela, a beautiful, fun, and wild woman! Together, we’re raising five teenagers in Highlands Ranch, navigating the chaos and joy of this new season. We both carry the weight of our pasts, sometimes we “walk with a limp" but God’s faithfulness has carried us through. I’m grateful every day for this fresh start and for the opportunity to display the faithfulness of God.
You recently wrote your first book. Tell us why you decided to write it, and a bit about it.
Beki died at 8 p.m. on a Wednesday night. I couldn’t sleep. My mind was racing. Eventually I got up around 5 a.m. and went downstairs to my home office. I just started writing for hours. I didn’t want to forget any of the details of what we went through. In addition, I had been leading worship and teaching at my church throughout this whole journey. I had many real-time lessons from the Lord that I was recording each step of the way. Lessons like how to combat lies and fear, abiding in Christ, cultivating gratitude, offering our lives as a sacrifice, and maintaining an eternal perspective. It’s half memoir and half handbook. I believe it serves as a really helpful tool for anyone who is attempting to navigate grief, loss, or a significant life change. The book is titled “When Tomorrow Stopped.”
Where do you see yourself going after writing this book?
I’m really enjoying writing! I started a Substack where I have continued to share articles on how to grieve in a healthy way. I fully intend to continue writing and teaching on the subject.
Where can we go to purchase this book or get in contact with you?
The book is available on Amazon or wherever you purchase books. You can reach out to me on Instagram @brandongrissom or at brandongrissom.com.
What are some other things we should know about you?
I’m tall! 6 ft 6 in. I enjoy Denver Nuggets basketball, Oklahoma Sooners football, skiing, and country music! I like to laugh. I tend to quote “The Office” several times per day. And I’m a pretty serious foodie; I keep a spreadsheet of all the best spots in the Denver area.
