Hi, my name is Michael Whitten, and I have the honor of serving as the Executive Director of the James P. Gills Family YMCA. I’ve been a part of this branch for five years, nearly two of them in my current role, and in that time, the Y has truly become like a second home to me.
Beyond my work here, I’m also a husband and father to two young children, which gives me a unique perspective on the Y’s impact. I’ve experienced it both as a leader and as a parent watching my kids grow and thrive through Y programs.
One of the things that inspires me daily is watching how our programs impact people across every stage of life. From swim lessons that give kids confidence in the water to youth sports that teach teamwork and perseverance, the Y is committed to nurturing the potential of every child. Our summer camps offer safe and engaging environments for kids to grow, providing parents with peace of mind. For adults and seniors, our wellness programs, fitness classes and social activities help keep bodies healthy and connections strong.
What makes the James P. Gills Family YMCA truly special is the way it brings people together. I see members supporting one another in group fitness classes, volunteers stepping up to serve our monthly food drives and families forming friendships on our fields and courts. Our chronic disease prevention initiatives are also making a significant difference in the health of our neighbors. It’s a place where people find encouragement, a sense of belonging and the resources they need to live healthier, happier lives.
I feel deeply grateful to lead this branch and to witness the impact the Y has on individuals and families every single day. Whether through my own children learning and growing here, or through the stories members share about how the Y has changed their lives, I’m constantly reminded that the James P. Gills Family YMCA is not just a building, it’s a lifeline for our community.
I encourage you to stop in and say hi and learn more about how the James P. Gills Family YMCA can serve you!
