Where did you grow up?
Well, as you can see by my picture, “grown-up” might not be the appropriate terminology. I’m a proud graduate of both Palisade High School and Colorado Mesa University. WEST SLOPE BEST SLOPE!
What brings you the most joy in going to music festivals?
You’ve heard the saying, “Dance like nobody is watching?” Flip that around, because one should “Dance like EVERYONE is watching.” The joy comes from everyone joining in, smiling, losing themselves in the music and the moment.
What’s the origin story of ‘watermelon man’?
It’s (usually) a music thing. I used to have more of a “multi-hat” persona. One summer, I had a huge plastic purple top hat with a giant spider on it. Incredibly sweaty. Tried this (watermelon hat) one on at the start of a Leftover Salmon run, it was comfortable, and it’s worked ever since. The built-in AC unit helps.
What’s your favorite song?
Tool covering No Quarter by Led Zeppelin. (Probably didn’t see that coming.)
Your favorite festival?
So many amazing ones! I’d have to go with either The Bender Jamboree in Vegas or Yarmony at Rancho Del Rio. Is it a coincidence that Timber! plays at them both this year?
What’s the first concert you remember going to?
The first big one I went to was KISS, followed by Motley Crue. And I’d still see both those bands. I obviously like pyrotechnics.
Artwork you love?
Philmyportraits. Google it.
What quality do you admire most in other people?
Smiles and laughter. Live your best life; you only die once.
What’s a band you’d love to see (even if they aren’t touring/around anymore)?
Traveling Wilburys had it all. Most talent in one act EVER! Telluride House Band is a close second.
The best thing to do in the summer is?
Tube. Boulder and Clear Creek are my favorites.
Your childhood crush?
Sylvester Stallone. Still kind of is. You know he’s like 72 and currently filming Last Blood? (Ask to see my wallet sometime.)
Favorite food?
Seafood. Being mountain folk, I crush crustaceans at an unbelievable pace when the opportunity arises.
Any hobbies?
CATURDAY!
Do you collect anything?
Upright basses and Dobros. Should have stuck with stamps.
You geek out on…
Caturday. What started as a small bluegrass movement is now, or soon will be, sweeping the nation. Celebrate the day after Friday by wearing your finest cat apparel/accessories. It’s the only celebration held 52 times a year. Are you kitten me?
