Our owner/publisher Michaela caught up with Molly Miller, ASU's new women's basketball head coach—an inspiring leader with a big heart and a bright future ahead.

As a fellow Missourian, I’d love to hear what sparked your love for basketball growing up, and how did your experiences in Missouri help shape the path that eventually brought you to Arizona?

Sports and basketball were always a big part of my family. My dad coached me growing up, so I fell in love with the game early on. From my high school days at Kickapoo to playing at Drury and then coaching, basketball provided me with a way to compete, be part of something bigger than myself, and challenge myself to grow. It's amazing how life works—every step, every move has built on the last, and I’m so grateful for it.

You had an incredible run at Grand Canyon, leading the Lopes to their first WAC title and NCAA tournament appearance with a 30-game winning streak. What do you think contributed to that success?

It was such a special run, and I’m proud of what we built. The key was our culture—our staff and players had a strong belief in what we were doing. We focused on trust, commitment, and hard work, not just winning games. Coaching that group was a highlight, and they will always have a special place in my heart.

Transitioning from GCU to Arizona State is a big move. What was the process like for you making that shift, and what excites you most about this new chapter with the Sun Devils?

The move felt like the right next step, both personally and professionally. The energy at ASU is infectious, and after speaking with Graham Rossini, the ASU Athletic Director, I realized our visions aligned. His leadership creates an environment where both coaches and athletes can thrive. I’m excited about the chance to elevate the program and continue growing as a coach and leader, inspiring young women to reach their full potential.

Let’s talk about that viral Gatorade dance video! It got so much love online—where did you learn those moves?

I was not expecting that shower, so I was caught by surprise! It was all about celebrating a big moment with my team. I was caught up in the excitement, so I randomly pulled out the moonwalk, which my mom—shoutout to Cindi Carter—taught me. Then, there was a huge puddle on the floor, so why not do water angels!

We’ve all got our tunes, and I’m sure the drive to the gym needs a soundtrack! What’s on your playlist right now?

My playlist has a mix of everything. I listen to hype tracks before games to get pumped up, but on my way to work, recruiting calls replace the music. I recently saw Luke Combs in concert, so I’m currently on a country kick!

You’ve got two kids and a husband in the mix, and your schedule must be packed. How do you balance family life with the demands of being a high-profile coach?

Balancing family and work is definitely a challenge, but my family is my priority. Derek is incredibly supportive, helping to manage the chaos. We stay organized and make time for what matters most—whether it's the kids coming to games or the team bonding with them at home. I love that my profession allows me to blend work and family, creating meaningful moments together.

Speaking of family, for my two boys, who are both seriously motivated to play collegiate hockey and basketball, what’s your best tip for keeping them inspired, focused, and enjoying the ride?

The best advice I can give is to find joy in the process. It’s easy to get caught up in the performance, but if they can focus on loving the game and pushing themselves to improve, the results will follow.

Over the course of your basketball career, what’s the best piece of advice you've ever received from a coach that has stuck with you and influenced your own coaching style?

One piece of advice that’s always stuck with me is, have a servant heart and care more about the person next to you and their needs over your own. A coach can be demanding and tough, but when you truly care about your players and their well-being, they respond to you in ways that go beyond just what happens on the court.

We’re curious: who would play you in a movie about your life? And what would the movie be called?

Well, my maiden name is Carter. So, I could have really been Coach Carter. That would have been a very easy character to get into!

Do you have any pre-game superstitions or something you always do to get yourself in the zone before a big game?

I wouldn’t say I have any major superstitions, but I do like to have a little routine. I like to get in the right headspace and set the tone for the game—staying calm and focused. I always read my Bible and then I will review our scout and make sure I am sharp on the game plan going into the game.

Between coaching, family life, and everything else, it sounds like your husband, Derek, must be a huge support. What’s something about him that most people might not know but that always makes you appreciate him even more?

Derek is incredibly patient and supportive—he’s the rock of our family. But what people might not know is how much he genuinely cares about the people around him. He has this ability to connect with others in a way that makes them feel heard and valued. I really admire that about him.

Crosby and Cy are at such fun ages right now—what are some of the things they’re passionate about, and do they show any early signs of following in your athletic footsteps?

They’re both full of energy and love sports—Crosby plays basketball, flag football, golf, and gymnastics, while Cy enjoys basketball, baseball, and flag football. He also loves wrestling with dad! They’re still finding their own paths, but it’s exciting to watch them develop their own interests and personalities!

Last but not least, if you weren't coaching basketball, what other career could you see yourself in?

My dream job has always been an international food blogger. I love to travel, and I love food—what a perfect combination!
