Founded in 1992, Assistance League of Charlotte is a non-profit that has been serving the needs of economically disadvantaged children and adults in our community for nearly thirty years. The Charlotte chapter is one of 120 member organizations that together number 22,000 members strong.
All initiatives implemented by Assistance League of Charlotte align with the organization’s mission statement confirming that through community programs, its member volunteers transform the lives of children and adults. Assistance League of Charlotte is guided by its vision statement, a commitment to seeing that essential needs are met in our community and families flourish.
Why the Need is Great in The Queen City
Statistics show that four of the 10 most economically distressed neighborhoods in North Carolina are in Charlotte. Other sobering statistics further demonstrate the economic struggle many of our fellow residents face daily:

Sixty-four thousand Charlotteans currently live in extreme poverty.

Approximately 5,000 students enrolled in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are homeless.

More than 40% of Charlotte’s children of color are poor.
A study conducted by Harvard University finds Charlotte has the worst economic mobility of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. The ambitious objective of the Assistance League of Charlotte is to be a part of the solution that moves Charlotte from the last place to being ranked as the number one urban region for upward economic mobility.
Charlotte Assistance League clearly signals the need for the community to come together to make this goal a reality in its identity statement: “We Feed. We Clothe. We Mentor. We Educate.”
Financial Support for Assistance League of Charlotte
The Assistance League of Charlotte’s programs are designed to provide disadvantaged children the opportunity to succeed by providing for physical necessities, including proper food and clothing.
Assistance League also provides, through its Mecklenburg Teen Court program, an alternative justice system for youthful offenders between the ages of twelve and seventeen. It is designed to provide juveniles with no previous convictions a second chance when they admit their guilt, agree to be tried by a jury of their peers and take responsibility for their actions.
These initiatives are made possible through generous personal and corporate donations, grants and proceeds from the Assistance League of Charlotte Thrift Shop.
