As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, summer brings with it a host of challenges for our skin. To help us navigate the season with confidence and a glowing complexion, we spoke with professional makeup artist Kristina Foreman. In this conversation, she shares essential tips, product recommendations, and professional advice on how to protect and nourish your skin all summer long.

Makeup Artist Kristina Foreman’s Sun-Safe Style Tips

What’s the #1 mistake people make with sunscreen?

Most people don’t use enough or forget to reapply. That’s how we get sun damage that causes damage can be hard to reverse. We need about a shot glass of sunscreen for your body and a nickel-sized amount for your face. Reapplying every two hours is highly recommended or immediately after swimming or sweating. That’s where we forget to protect our skin and risk getting sun damage.

Is sunscreen enough? And how do I find a clean SPF?

Sunscreen is just the beginning. I highly suggest looking for SPF in 30 or more , non-toxic, non nano blends as top recommendations – EWG.org is a great resource. Wearing SPF shirts also helps for prime outdoor hours, adding a wide brim hat is essential. I try to avoid direct sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. personally. A late afternoon beach trip is safer and more relaxing.

What styles of SPF products are available if we don’t want to look greasy all day?

First, my absolute “go-to” trick is adding my favorite mineral SPF 30 Skin tint serum foundation if I want to look fresh and ready for the day at work or play. It goes on smoothly, leaves a beautiful skin fresh look with SPF and skin care serum in one. My second recommendation is applying my SPF 30 clean mineral powder over my cream SPF for added protection. It’s so easy to reapply for added coverage throughout the day and doesn’t leave you looking dry or cakey (my go-to products are available at my studio in downtown Milford)!

What’s one thing about skincare that people should keep in mind?

Sun protection isn’t just for summer. UV rays are active year-round, even on cloudy days. I wear SPF every day on my face, neck and hands to prevent sunspots and premature aging and I love being outside a lot. You don’t need to avoid the sun—just enjoy it smarter.
