Kristin Baird, MD, started Dermatology of the Rockies in 2011 after serving the dermatology needs of the Longmont and Estes Park communities since 2003. Today, Dr. Kristin Baird and five additional licensed providers offer medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology care to those in and around Boulder County.

Dermatology of the Rockies’ Body Contouring Center launched in 2019, focusing on whole body wellness treatments using the latest technologies. The first procedure they offered, CoolSculpting, is a non-surgical fat reduction treatment that freezes and destroys fat cells. It is FDA-cleared for the treatment of stubborn fat in the abdomen, love handles, flanks, back, inner and outer thighs and chin.

“People are seeking non-invasive body contouring solutions where there’s little to no downtime,” says Raenell Wilkinson, aesthetics director. Raenell is a CCMA who has been nationally recognized as a Body Contouring Specialist, an Allergan AMI Faculty Member and National Trainer for CoolSculpting.

With its CoolSculpting success, the office has added several new body contouring devices, including Emface, EmsculptNeo, Emsella and Emtone. They also added two CoolSculpting Elite machines and now offer quad sculpting. These are non-surgical body contouring procedures that use various technologies to target different areas of the body.

Researchers and developers that manufacture medical devices often reach out to Dr. Baird for input on emerging technologies and treatment protocols. Dermatology of the Rockies was one of the first offices in the United States to offer Emface technology. Emface is a non-surgical face lifting treatment that uses radiofrequency and electrical muscle stimulation to lift and tighten facial muscles and skin.

EmsculptNeo promotes muscle building by using electromagnetic energy to contract muscles up to 20,000 times in a 30-minute session. Emsella, on the other hand, is a pelvic floor treatment that uses electromagnetic energy to strengthen and tone the pelvic floor muscle, which helps improve stress incontinence and sexual wellness. Emtone is a body contouring and cellulite treatment that uses radio frequency energy to tighten and tone the skin on the hips, buttocks, abdomen, arms and legs.

Ellacor, a physician-operated device, is the newest addition to the Body Contouring Center, available to patients as of late June. Ellacor’s micro-coring technology is the first of its kind. The procedure is conducted without thermal or laser-based energy, so damage to surrounding tissue is minimized, leading to quick healing and less than one week of downtime.

“Essentially, we’re taking hundreds of half-millimeter punch biopsies, purely extracting excess skin, which leads to tightening,” says Dr. Maxine Warren, a board-certified dermatologist, regarding Ellacor. She’s one of Dermatology of the Rockies’ three physicians and offers cosmetic and medical dermatological care treating a wide variety of skin concerns, including psoriasis, eczema and hair loss.

Ellacor is FDA-approved for the lower face and jowl area, where it can extract up to two square inches of skin per treatment. “Ellacor is exciting because there are not many effective non-surgical options available for this area,” Dr. Warren says. In the future, she expects Ellacor will be approved for treating the skin of the neck, above the knees and on the stomach for stretch marks.

Oftentimes, patients come in to Dermatology of the Rockies seeking one type of treatment, only to realize they need a different solution. Because of this, consultations in the Body Contouring Center are complimentary.

“We educate people. We don’t recommend treatments that are not suitable for patient outcomes just to ‘sell,’” Raenell says. Each patient receives a customized treatment plan, focused on individual concerns and goals. “We proudly showcase our own patients’ before and after images on our website. It’s not only the technology; it’s our expert team of providers that may be even more important when considering treatment options.”
