Why Pamela Loves Giving

Holiday market to support CHOA

Inspired by a brave little girl, one Buckhead gallery is supporting Children's Healthcare of Atlanta by bringing together more than 50 artists and vendors for a special holiday shopping experience this month.

In the spirit of the upcoming holiday season, and in support of Atlanta area creatives and small businesses at such a critical time, Artist Alice Trahant, together with Katie Jones, owner of Buckhead Art + Company, are hosting the second annual Buckead Art + Company Holiday Market, November 11-14 in the Buckhead Village District. The pop-up will take place in an empty storefront space next to Le Bilboquet at 3039 Peachtree Road. A percentage of all sales will benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in the name of Pamela Reid, a local Atlanta sixth-grader and close family friend who has struggled and overcome pediatric medulloblastoma. "Last year, the Holiday Market was able to donate an incredible $62,000 to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. We look forward to surpassing this number in 2021," says Alice Trahant.

Pamela's story is one of incredible perseverance, courage, and hope. At the age of seven, in September 2017, Pamela was diagnosed with medulloblastoma. After a successful brain tumor resection by Dr. Andrew Reisner and Dr. Baranashish Brahma at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, she recuperated in the hospital for a month while receiving intensive rehabilitation. Pamela then went on to Boston to receive proton radiation daily for six weeks, and after treatments, returned to Atlanta and began 11 months of chemotherapy at CHOA under the guidance of Dr. Tobey Macdonald. She completed chemotherapy in November 2018 and continues to be healthy and cancer-free. Pamela is motivated to return the kindness she received during treatment. She started Pamela’s Proton Presents in 2019, benefitting the Emory Proton Center in Atlanta. Pamela’s Proton Presents provides Emory radiation patients, and their siblings, age-appropriate gift closets to pick out a present at the end of each week of radiation. Pamela wants other children going through cancer to know they are loved and supported.

“It is our hope to be able to expand Pamela’s Proton Presents to include other ways to support families, including subsidizing some living expenses. We want to show kindness and help these families as they navigate the many difficult decisions surrounding treatment for a child,” says Pamela’s mother, Emily.

Go to PamelasProtonPresents.com to watch a sweet video that explains how she started it. It is easy to donate online (all donations are tax-deductible). Checks may be mailed to the Emory Proton Center, 615 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30308.

Then plan on shopping at the Buckhead Art + Company Holiday Market this month in honor of Pamela.
