Six Skincare Tips for Men

A regular cleansing routine is important for healthy and happy skin.

Petra Ellington, owner of Aromaskin Salon in Peachtree City, shares the following tips from her 14 years as an esthetician. Skincare is important for everyone and Petra makes it easy to take care of the largest organ of the body. Petra is a fan of keeping it simple, but if you’re just washing your skin with a bar of soap in the morning and night, some added, easy tips will help to enhance what you are already doing.

Cleansing is the building block

Cleanse your face daily, preferably in the evening to remove dirt, toxins and debris before bed.  Clean skin but not stripped or dehydrated is the key. While soap will get you squeaky clean it can be harsh as it removes too much oil from the dermis, depriving the skin of its moisture barrier, which will cause dryness and irritation.  Cleansers are much gentler. Use a creamy cleanser for dry to normal skin and a gel or charcoal cleanser for oily skin.

Shaving techniques

It’s great to shave after your shower, your skin will be softer and your coarse stubble will be easier to remove. You can also splash your face with warm water then apply a moisturizing shaving gel or crème.  Shaving with the grain of your hair is much gentler on your face, if one shave is not enough for smoothness then reapply and shave a second time. Shaving against the grain of hair can cause ingrown hair, razor burns and irritation.

Washcloth, microfibers or hands

Washcloths or microfiber cloths can be great for oily skin as they remove more dirt and oil than just using your hands. Be sure to use a clean cloth that is designated for your face daily. For dry to normal skin, you should use your hands to cleanse your face as a cloth can be too harsh. Always pat your skin dry with a towel after cleansing your face to keep irritation down.

Moisturizers and eye cream

Facial Moisturizers are recommended and have many benefits. The right moisturizer gives your skin a glow. Some balance the oil and water level of the skin to reduce flaking, redness and irritation. A light aloe moisturizer is great for oily and acne-prone skin.   If you want to take your skincare routine to the next level, eye cream or serum is great for lessening the appearance of wrinkles and dark circles.

Sunblock Is a MUST!

The most important step is sunblock. An SPF 30 sunblock utilizes either zinc oxide or titanium oxide as the active ingredient, also known as a broad spectrum that blocks UVA and UVB rays. Everyone needs SPF to protect themselves from the UVA rays. Reapply every 2 hours.

Which products do I use?

There are a lot of products on the market today and it can be very confusing looking at ingredients and trying to figure out which product is best for your skin. I recommend making an appointment to get a professional facial. Your esthetician will cleanse your skin, analyze it, exfoliate, clean your pores, massage and hydrate. She will then make recommendations taking into account your skincare needs.
