Let’s face it - our skin is some serious stuff. As our largest organ spanning about 22 square feet, the skin protects our internal organs, regulates our body temperature and allows us to communicate with our environment through thousands of nerve endings. However, our skin is constantly under the brunt of daily living: sun, stress, poor diet, dehydration and hormonal imbalances. These stressors, over time, can drastically impact our skin. Adequate sleep, eating well and staying hydrated can help our skin achieve normalcy. Nourishing our skin with the right skincare products and seeking regular treatments are other smart ways to care for our skin.
Katie Belle Glendye, owner and master aesthetician of The Skin Society in Fayetteville, says that skin health, backed by science, is one of the best ways to care for our skin. As such, Katie Belle and her team of skin health specialists at The Skin Society treat the skin as serious business. The fiery ball in the sky is responsible for 90% of aging and other skin issues. “The sun is the skin’s worst enemy,” Katie Belle warns. It can cause skin spots, dehydration, and skin cancer. Drinking copious amounts of water and wearing a hat and sunscreen, are good ways to protect our faces from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Stress can also wreak havoc on the skin. “Blood feeds our skin cells and takes toxins away. When we undergo stress, our skin gets the last of what’s left over for nourishment,” explains Katie Belle.
Katie Belle's relationship with her skin has not always been a love affair. She received a wake-up call about 13 years ago. An up-close photo portrayed that her skin was much older than what her biological age showed. This aging, Katie Belle says, came from years of “sunning” in tanning beds. She then became intrigued when she learned that aging could be salvaged if she took care of her skin. “I wanted to help my skin and solve the damage in my skin.” Working for a couple of dermatology practices after a specialized education in skincare provided Katie Belle with a solid foundation in skin health. In February 2018, she opened The Skin Society. Katie Belle is quick to point out that The Skin Society is not a spa. The Skin Society’s founder has formed a dedicated team of skin health experts to include three licensed aestheticians with 30 years of combined experience, a medical doctor, a cosmetic injector, two first-impressionists and Greta, a two-year-old Labradoodle.
“Achieving skin health is like a team sport,” she explains. “It takes you and your aesthetician working together toward a goal.” This includes monthly skin health treatments with a licensed aesthetician and daily home use of physician-grade products. A typical skin health diet, coined as “the core four”, that Katie Belle recommends includes a cleanser, an exfoliant, an antioxidant and sunscreen. Exfoliants are used at night for repair and gentle removal of dead skin cells. Antioxidants and sunscreen (> SPF 30) are daytime products that protect against free radicals and the environment. The skin health treatments offered by Katie Belle and her team are designed to elicit specific skin results. HydraFacial deep skin treatments cleanse the skin and remove toxins. Microneedling stimulates collagen growth under the top layers of skin in an area called the Dermis and helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
