Your Best Self

Begin the Upward Spiral of Health by Looking (and Feeling) Confident Within Your Skin

Shannon Miller is a proponent of optimal health that runs more than skin deep—it starts with the belief that we can all be the best version of ourselves. An esthetician since 2008, and founder of Skin Firm in Bend, she upholds that philosophy by supporting the way we care for the body’s biggest organ: our skin.  She grew up being fascinated by the science of the epidermis, and today her area of emphasis is on non-invasive treatments that show results. She moved to Bend because she loved what the community stands for, and for how people treat each other. Especially during challenging times, the environment offers many ways to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and at Skin Firm, she uses technology to reduce cellulite because she believes we should all feel confident to put on a pair of shorts as we hike, stand-up paddle and enjoy the outdoors. “It’s easier to get moving when you feel better about yourself,” says Miller, “And when people feel good about how they look, they tend to take better care of their body as a whole—it becomes an upward spiral and easier to maintain.” She continues, “Our bodies are all unique and wonderful systems.  The better you treat yourself, the healthier you will look and feel.”

In the Q & A below, Miller shares what she has learned about being kind to ourselves and on new ways to treat cellulite to look and feel our best:

We hear about the value of self care. What does that mean for you and why is it important?

"Take care of your body, it's the only place you have to live," is one of my favorite quotes. This goes beyond the surface of your outer appearance to include good nutrition, drinking enough water and stress reduction.  Getting started is usually the hardest part, so if it can be started with a relaxing and effective treatment like massage, the other parts can fall into place.

What do we need to know about cellulite?

Eighty-90 percent of women have some degree of cellulite, usually on thighs and buttocks.  Cellulite is made of mostly fat, but is not a smooth fatty tissue.  Cellulite is a combination of fat, water and toxins trapped in a net of connective tissue.  When the body has circulatory and elimination problems, the connective tissue loses its strength and unmetabolized fats and waste become trapped beneath the skin, causing a dimpled appearance.

Lifestyle choices that contribute to the formation of cellulite are processed foods containing additives, dehydration, lack of exercise, stress and exposure to free radicals such as pollution, excessive sunlight and smoke. While there is no magical cure, it definitely helps to increase water intake, eat as healthy as possible, get regular cardiovascular exercise, and reduce stress.

Can you explain how vacuum massage therapy works on the body?

Synergie Vacuum Massage physically manipulates collagen fibers and connective tissue to increase metabolism to an area by increasing local blood circulation. Positive pressure causes the blood vessels to constrict (tighten) and suction causes them to dilate (open).  This FDA-approved technology stimulates subcutaneous tissues which can change the fat content of cells; eliminating excess fat and toxins through the lymphatic system.  Synergie cellulite treatments dramatically tone and tight skin, resulting in smoother texture and reduction in appearance of cellulite.  There are many health benefits to lymphatic drainage massage including stress reduction, edema relief, strengthened immunity and enhanced skin health.

What lifestyle adaptations do you recommend to optimize body- and self-confidence?

Stop comparing yourself and your body to the images we all see on TV and in beauty magazines, they are unrealistic and most likely are unhealthy.  We are all beautifully flawed.  Find ways to focus on what you do love about your body, even if in the moment it is just that your limbs are intact. When you hear negative self talk, stand up for yourself like you would a close friend. Start small:  If you know you are going to have cake for dessert, try to order a healthy dinner.  If you want that second glass of wine, have a full glass of water first.  Be kind to yourself and remember that your body is home for your soul.
