The street view throughout Bend has gotten a whole lot more colorful over the past two years, and now the spectrum has expanded. Thanks to the work of the High Desert Mural Festival, City of Bend staff and Council plus previous groundwork from community partners, a “mural zone” pilot program was approved for the Makers District in 2016. In May, the expansion of the mural zone was expanded to the entire city. As buildings become canvases for expression, we look forward to seeing the creativity of our city in full bloom. In a sea of asphalt surrounding Greenwood Avenue, a garden of color emerges in a large-scale painting by Nicole Fontana-Campbell. A muralist for more than 12 years, Nicole jumped at the chance to create this first legal mural in the Makers District with the help of Douglas Robertson from the High Desert Mural Festival and Liz Rink, owner of the building. The bright, colorful, and whimsical design complements the building’s business, The Open Book.
“I love how a glimpse of color can catch your eye from the street and brighten your day. Color brings joy.”
