Collin County is blessed to have an outstanding surgeon who is Board Certified in both Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Jon Thompson is passionate about not just providing great care but also utilizing the latest in treatments and procedures.
Dr. Thompson graduated with honors from prestigious Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and received his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of Health Services in Bethesda, MD. His current special interests include joint instability, and cartilage preservation and restoration. Dr. Thompson treats patients of all ages, including pediatrics. He is known for his ability to perform state-of-the-art cartilage restoration techniques which restores and preserves joints and allows patients to return to their normal activity levels and postpone joint replacements.
When asked why he chose orthopedics as his specialty, Dr. Thompson explains that in medicine you can either “manage” issues or “fix” issues and he preferred the latter. He says he enjoys fixing just about anything, including things around his house. So, if you need to “fix” an injury to the shoulder, knee, ankle, elbow and wrist, he is the surgeon to see. Also, note, even though his certification is in Sports Medicine, you don’t have to have your injury due to a sports event. Week-end warriors need fixing too.
Dr Thompson has been honored as D Magazine’s Best Doctors in Dallas, as well as the Best Doctors in Collin County. Those accolades seem to be well deserved for a young physician who, upon entering into the orthopedic realm saw a great need that he solved. Finding his interest leaning towards orthopedics surgery, Dr. Thompson asked some residents what the “go to” book was to learn the basics of that specialty. He had wanted to be able to impress his new leaders on his early knowledge but found no such book existed. So, he filled that absence by authoring, “Netter’s Concise Orthopaedic Anatomy,” which has become the definitive orthopedic anatomy guide for orthopedic students and clinicians. The book is names after Dr. Frank Netter, who was known for his drawings and their skillful depiction of the latest techniques and procedures. His work has become the best-selling resource, which has become an excellent guide to have on hand during a young physician’s rotation in orthopedics, residency, or as a quick look-up in practice. Dr. Thompson keeps this updated with the latest diagnostic and treatment methods.
One of the reasons Dr. Thompson became a physician is that he saw and loved the evolution of medicine and wanted to be part of it. His strong background in the sciences and math gave him a strong inclination as well. When asked if his family was involved in medicine he said, “No, I just liked doing my own thing”. His patients, as well as young physicians, are surely glad he did.
He and his wife, Tiffany, have five children between the ages of 12 and 23 with the oldest studying courses in pre-med. He says his family is his “everything” and provides the greatest joy in his life. When not practicing medicine, he enjoys exercise and travel. Having grown up in southern California, he especially loves beaches.
