Apple Pie In a Mug

Warming Up From the Inside With a Take on an Old Classic

As fall changes to winter, there is never a better time for a warm cup of hot cider,  We've adapted this recipe by adding a little spice and citrus to the winter classic. For the over 21 crowd, pump it up with Fireball and butterscotch schnapps to invoke the flavors of apple pie.

Ingredients

1 orange

2 teaspoons whole cloves

1 gallon apple cider

1/2 cup lemon juice

Cinnamon sticks, for garnish

Star Anise

Fireball Cinnamon whiskey, optional

Butterscotch schnapps, optional

Instructions:

  1. Stick the pointy ends of the cloves into the orange so that just the buds of the cloves are visible. Cover entire orange with cloves.
  2. In a slow cooker or on the stove top, mull the apple cider with the clove studded orange, lemon juice, 4 cinnamon sticks and 3 star anise for several hours on low heat.
  3. Serve in warm mugs with a fresh cinnamon stick garnish. For adults, add fireball and schnapps to taste.
