The Male Aesthetic

Plastic surgery is becoming less taboo — even for men.

Often, when people think of plastic surgery, they think of reality TV stars and celebrities, but with the societal shift in the quest for a more natural result, plastic surgery is becoming more mainstream — even for men.

Dr. Julio Sosa is a board-certified plastic surgeon and for more than 20 years has been the owner and lead practitioner of Bloomfield Plastic Surgery, a boutique-style cosmetic surgery facility focused solely on patient-centered care for a variety of aesthetic and reconstructive needs. The practice works with women and men whose requests range from medical needs to personal aesthetic goals, and Sosa is known for consistently delivering aesthetically pleasing and natural-looking results.

Drawn to plastic and reconstructive surgery since early in his education, his passion is continually nurtured because of the wide variety of procedures and creative challenges that regularly arise in the industry. “I love the variety of procedures and creativity that goes along with being a plastic surgeon,” Sosa says. That means not only more options for men, but that men are feeling more comfortable partaking in these options.

“We offer a lot of services for men,” Sosa says. “Currently, the most common service is Emsculpt, which feels like a deep-tissue massage all while the body is building muscle and destroying fat cells.” While Botox and liposuction are common among men, Emsculpt has become a worthy contender, specifically for men — 25 percent of Sosa’s patients having this procedure are men. Although Emsculpt can be used to tone and define abs, arms, glutes and calves, the most popular areas for men are the abs, as the non-invasive, zero down time, pain-free procedure can be done in the office in just 30 minutes.

“Each 30-minute ab session of Emsculpt is equivalent to doing 20,000 crunches,” Sosa says. “It’s a more natural way to fine-tune the body compared to other options because it builds muscle and destroys fat cells much quicker than one could do on their own with diet and exercise.”

In addition to the non-surgical options like Emsculpt, Sosa also offers surgical services that are popular with men, including eyelid surgery to enhance the appearance of aging eyes and gynecomastia surgery to reduce the size of breast tissue in men. While there are common components to each of these surgeries, “no procedure is exactly the same” — the Sosa’s practice takes great pride in customizing each client’s care to fit their specific body and needs.
