This new year brings not only hope but love as well. There is nothing that says "love" more than a wedding. This wedding season will bring our bride's and grooms many choices for that special day. One of those important decisions is in the selection of flowers. There are many wonderful blooms to make those nuptials extra special. Here are six of those trending blossoms:
- Butterfly ranunculus: with its delicate look one can imagine this flower swaying in the breeze of a grassy meadow. It’s petals have the appearance of fluttery butterfly wings, hence the name. I love to include one or two stems in a hand-tied wildflower bouquet for a casual outdoor wedding. Don’t let this blossom fool you, despite it’s fragile appearance, it can last in a vase for weeks.
- Carnations: I know, I know.... “no carnations” is a phrase we hear often when taking orders in the shop but I have to disagree. The colors and varieties of carnations are limitless. From fancy bicolors to dusty antique mauves to bright citrus hues. They boast an incredibly long vase-life, have a wonderful fragrance, and they are affordable. As long as they are in the hands of a creative designer, what’s not to love?
- Craspedia: common name “billy balls” is Pantone’s “illuminating “ color of 2021. Billy balls add a charming whimsy to bouquets or centerpieces and they can be used fresh or they can be dried to perfection. I personally love them mixed with celery green hydrangea and dainty chamomile stems.
- Dahlias: dahlias have been an “it girl” for a while now and they’re not going anywhere soon. From the geometric globe varieties to the more open water lily types, dahlias are a favorite with brides and designers alike. We mourn when the first frost comes and dahlia season is over.
- Poppies: my new favorite poppy is called earl grey. One crop can have many shades from pale lavender to greyish purple. They are fussy and temperamental but when you get the perfect blossom, the skies part and it’s like a gift from the heavens!
- Chrysanthemums: “mums” for short have also been on the no list for many years but they have made a comeback. They can de intricate and delicate and they are plentiful in variety and type. I am in love with some of the new micro varieties as well as the luscious football showstoppers.
