Porch-raits for a Purpose

Birmingham and Bloomfield families posed on porches for both entertainment and a good cause.

When Birmingham resident Carrie Carlisle Schulze posted an amazingly hilarious photo of her family depicting life during the COVID-19 quarantine, founder of Birmingham Bloomfield Hills Moms Jenny Rosenthal reached out to her the next day, and they agreed that they needed to “make something big out of it.”

“We created ‘Porch-raits for a Purpose’ to give families a chance to have a photo keepsake to represent this time at home while also raising money for Humble Design, a non-profit that is currently helping metro Detroit families living in shelters during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Rosenthal explained.

Rosenthal spread the word over the Birmingham Bloomfield Hills Moms social media accounts, suggesting that each family donate $25; however, the majority of the 45 local families that participated gave more, raising a total of $2,600 in just one week. All proceeds were donated to Humble Design.

The porch-raits included a quick five to ten-minute photo session, representing each family’s experience during the quarantine. They were not only a great way for families to document a strange time in history but also added a little bit of fun to one of the days in quarantine.

Some photo suggestions for families from Schulze and Rosenthal included using props like toilet paper, rubber gloves, hand sanitizer, Clorox, face masks, signs, wine.com boxes or business on top and PJs on bottom; making “UGH” faces and posing; and/or including encouraging signs and love for others, particularly those on the front lines.

Schulze is a creative mom of two girls, graphic designer and has a passion for photography. She spent a week scheduling, taking, and editing the porch-raits of families. The photos were taken from at least six feet away to provide for acceptable social distancing.

Rosenthal is a mom of three boys and runs the Birmingham Bloomfield Hills Moms website and blog, which is a part of The Local Moms Network. Its purpose is to give moms a “go-to” website, filled with curated local resources, an event calendar, meet a mom interviews, blog posts and more.
