Interior Design Q&A With Judi Alvino Designs

Judi Alvino is an interior designer who's been in business for nearly 40 years

Q. What is your design philosophy?

A. I believe your home and your environment are important to your mental health. It's crucial that your personal space brings comfort, support, and positive emotional energy. I like to push the boundaries of design and do what's best for the client and the overall design,

Q. When did you start your own firm and why?

A. I’ve been in business for 40 years and I’ve reinvented myself and my career several times due to life changes and economic downturns. Reinventing myself is kind of my super power! I started my career as a window treatment specialist and evolved into my own luxury brand of design.

Q. What’s your favorite design style and why?

A. In my profession, it’s important to work with my client’s tastes to help them find their own design style and educate them on what works best in their space. I work with their design comfort level and how they want their space to feel. I ask many questions to get to know them. What colors make you happy? What are your least favorite?  What word best defines your preferences?  Formal, elegant, playful, inviting, modern, traditional? All these answers and many more, help with the creative process.

Q. What’s a popular design element right now that clients want?

A. Curvy and colorful!. There is a real appreciation for the home right now, and most folks are looking to freshen up and make changes in their spaces.  I believe one of the most important elements at this time is color, and comfort.  Color evokes emotion and it’s important to choose what makes my client most happy. Curves are back! A curvy sofa is sculptured and can have an embracing feel.  With soft and luxurious fabric, it accentuates comfort and sophistication. It’s an artistic style which lends itself to more cozy conversation. I use this design element in upholstered seating, as well as design elements in accents and final touches.

Q. What other design elements should people think about?

A. Softgoods are always an important element in good design. Perfectly tailored window coverings, pillows and trimmings will always get my special attention.  A good window treatment can subtly extend the design scheme up the wall. And, of course, the final touch, the accessories and accents are what brings it all together.
