Treat Dry Eyes at Fairway Eye Center

Fix the Source, Not Just the Symptoms, This Winter

Fairway Eye Center is in tune to the eye problems many have during the winter months. Staying indoors with the heat on and less humidity outside can lead to more blinking, more eyedrops and even less time wearing contacts.

They opened in 2004 at the northeast corner of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Mission Road in Fairway, Kan., and were established with the idea that people shouldn’t have to get an eye exam and eyewear at two separate places. Unlike many eye centers, they stocked theirs with chic, fashionable frames and a knowledgeable staff that loves helping customers find what looks good on them, and what doesn’t. With a wide variety of designer frames to choose from, Fairway Eye Center is a great fit for your vision needs.

Dr. Carl Kramer, OD, FAAO, explains how he treats dry eyes.

“For dry eye treatment we use a system called MiBo Thermoflo, which uses gentle heat to warm up the oil glands in the eyelids in an effort to get the glands functioning more normally. After the heating of the glands, we use special tools to express the oil glands of the eyelids to get the glands to begin secreting oil properly again,” he says.

“The MiBoflo uses no medications or other methods besides heat on the lids, which makes it very easy for the patients to tolerate, and we tend to have good results following treatment. After therapy there will likely be some maintenance therapy such as warm compresses daily to help enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.”

Fairway Eye Center is one of the only clinics in the area that focuses on dry eye treatment with the use of systems like MiBoflo and makes every effort to treat dry eye at the source of the problem rather than just managing the symptoms of dryness with drops and other palliative therapies.

Fairway Eye Center's Dr. Jessica Nichols, OD, serves on the Board of Directors at the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired, and partners with the Lions Club to collect used glasses at all their locations. They have a Gift of Sight Program through which they donate a pair of glasses to those in need for every pair they sell and also participate in the InfantSEE program, providing free eye exams for babies under the age of 1 year.

They invite you to schedule an appointment or come try on some glasses. And by all means, research the dry eye treatment, so you won’t suffer during the frigid season. Beautiful eyes deserve to stay beautiful!
